Although the following do not fit too neatly
within this
section, they do illustrate that the Internet site “Zenit: The World
Seen
From Rome”
(www.zenit.org) is an active
participant in all
issues of the day. And that is a good
thing. It would be a much better thing
if such subjects were at times addressed from the pulpit for the
benefit of the
Laity in the trenches.
- “BISHOPS JOIN WITH JEWS,
PROTESTANTS TO DEFEND MARRIAGE”: Zenit, 2/1/2011.
- “RIGHT TO MARRY ISN’T ABSOLUTE,
SAYS PONTIFF: Zenit, 1/23/2011.
- “A FATAL CONFLICT” (mother
vs. baby in pregnancy): Commonweal, 1/28/2011; CATHOLIC HOSPITALS
REACH AGREEMENT WITH BISHOPS”: Zenit, 1/31/2011.
- “THE NEW ABORTION WARS”:
NYTimes Editorial Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011; “ABORTION: EASY ACCESS,
COMPLEX EVERYTHING ELSE”: NYTimes Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, Ct. p1…”A
health department report released last month proves it: about 40% of
all pregnancies in the city end that way, an average of about 90,000 a
year in recent years”; “LIVING WITH THE TRUTH”, by
Archbishop Charles Chaput, Catalyst, Jan.-Feb., 2011 (www.catholicleague.org). (“Let
me tell you why I believe abortion is the crucial issue of our
age….”;US
BISHOPS BACK 3 LIFE-PROTECTING BILLS”: Zenit, 1/25/2011.
- “MAKING A CHILD, OR RECEIVING
ONE”: Zenit, 12/8/2010; “ASSEMBLING THE GLOBAL BABY”, WSJ
Dec. 11-12, 2010, pC1; “BUYING BABIES”: Zenit, 1/30/2011.
- In the matter of in - vitro
fertilization, “BETTER OUTCOMES WITH SINGLE EMBRYO TRANSFER”,
MedPage Today (www.medpagetoday.com),
12/22/2010. (This, in my opinion, would
vitiate the major – and proper- objection of the Church to this
procedure).
- “CARDINAL: SUPPORT CELIBACY TO
FIGHT SECULARIZATION”: Zenit, 1/27/11. In
my opinion, “Close, but no cigar”.
- “ITALIAN CARDINAL WARNS OF
“RELIGIOUS CLEANSING”: Zenit, 1/25/2011.
- “HOLLYWOOD, US BISHOPS SPOTLIGHT
“THE RITE”: Zenit, 1/21/2011.
- “VATICAN
WARNED IRISH BISHOPS NOT TO REPORT ABUSE”, by Shawn Pogatchnik, AP,
1/18/2011; “MISSING MANDATE FROM ROME”, NYTimes Editorial,
Thursday Jan. 20, 2011, pA26.
As a regular reader of Zenit and of other
Catholic and
also secular sources, I had begun to wonder whether Pope Benedict XVI
was
actually able to alter the nearly immutable direction of this massive
super-tanker called the Church from within his Hierarchy.
And then comes an article by Francis X. Rocca,
the Vatican correspondent for Religion News Service: “POPE BENEDICT
BEATIFIES
HIS STAR PREDECESSOR”, WSJ Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, Opinion, pA11. In this article comparing and contrasting
this Holy Father with Pope John Paul ll, he states: “It is
impossible to
imagine the late Pope giving an interview of the kind that
Benedict
granted the German journalist Peter Seewald last year, in which he
repeatedly
admitted personal error and suggested that he is largely impotent to
enforce
many of his own policies within the Church.”
At
the end of the day, is this “What’s Wrong With The
Catholic Church”??
