RAPID
RESPONSE (Archives)...Daily Commentary on News of the Day
This is a new
section. It will
offer fresh,
quick reactions by myself to news and events of the day, day by day, in
this rapid-fire world of ours. Of course, as in military
campaigns,
a rapid response in one direction may occasionally have to be followed
by a "strategic withdrawal" in another direction. Charge that
to
"the fog of war", and to the necessary flexibility any mental or
military
campaign must maintain to be effective. But the mission will
always
be the same: common sense, based upon facts and "real politick",
supported
by a visceral sense of Justice and a commitment to be
pro-active.
That's all I promise.

"CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?" - AGAIN?
1) Aspirin is an ANTI-INFLAMMATORY.
The Inflammatory part of the Immune System is excessively active during anything but a mild COVID-19 case!
I have been stating this since March in this section. It should not have been rocket science.
It
took four months for the scientists and academicians to come to this
realization and to recommend Dexamethasone - a Steroid and an
anti-inflammatory for "cytokine storm". Then came the "need" for
Double-Blind/ Cross-Over studies to "confirm".
Must the use of aspirin go through the same labyrinth while patients suffer and die?.
"Follow the Science"...but beware myopic scientists.

Tale of Two Recoveries
America’s sharp and quick economic rebound reminds us of the one that never happened.
By
James Freeman
Oct. 29, 2020 3:50 pm ET
Has
the U.S. economy officially ended former President Barack Obama’s “new
normal” of sluggish growth and diminished expectations? The speed and
strength of America’s post-shutdown revival should inspire U.S. workers
and investors to raise their expectations.
The Journal’s Harriet Torry reports:
The
economy grew at a record pace in the third quarter—increasing 7.4% over
the prior quarter and at a 33.1% annual rate—recovering about
two-thirds of the ground it lost earlier in the coronavirus pandemic...
The increase in growth, the biggest jump in records dating to 1947,
followed a record decline earlier in the pandemic when the virus
disrupted business activity across the country.
Josh Mitchell of the Journal notes another highly encouraging report:
The
number of Americans filing initial claims for unemployment insurance
fell last week to the lowest level since the pandemic began, suggesting
layoffs are easing despite a rise in coronavirus infections.
Initial
jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, fell by 40,000 to 751,000 in the
week through Oct. 24, the Labor Department said Thursday. That was the
lowest level of claims since mid-March, just before the pandemic shut
down much business activity throughout the U.S.
Americans are
enjoying just the kind of sharp, strong rebound one hopes to see after
a downturn. But our recent history suggested to some that such robust
revivals were no longer in the cards. After the U.S. economy descended
into a period of decline from late 2007 until mid-2009—what some have
called “the great recession”—Americans waited and waited for the
powerful growth breakout that never arrived.
As President
beginning in January of 2009, Barack Obama presided over what became
known as a “new normal” of slow recovery and limited opportunity.
Economists in and out of government have spent years trying to figure
out why economic growth and jobs didn’t bounce higher.
In 2018 Peter Ferrara took a crack at an explanation:
Milton
Friedman was the first economist to notice a pattern in American
economic history: The deeper the recession, the stronger the recovery.
The economy has to grow even faster than normal for a while to catch up
to where it would have been without the recession. The fundamentals of
America’s world-leading economy are so strong that the pattern held
throughout the country’s history.
Until the past decade. The 2008-09
recession was so bad, the economy should have come roaring back with a
booming recovery—even stronger than Reagan’s boom in the 1980s. But Mr.
Obama carefully, studiously pursued the opposite of every pro-growth
policy Reagan had followed. What he got was the worst recovery from a
recession since the Great Depression.
Before Mr. Obama, in the 11
previous recessions since the Depression, the economy recovered all
jobs lost during the recession an average of 27 months after the
recession began. In Mr. Obama’s recovery, dating from the summer of
2009, the recession’s job losses were not recovered until after 76
months—more than six years...
Before Mr. Obama, in the 11 previous
post-Depression recessions, the economy recovered the gross domestic
product lost during the recession within an average of 4.6 quarters, or
a little over a year. It took Mr. Obama’s recovery 14 quarters, or 3½
years, to reach that point. The Reagan recovery took half that time.
The
Obama policy mixture of higher taxes and surging regulation was
combined with public malinvestment. In 2012 your humble correspondent
reviewed an informative book devoted to Mr. Obama’s signature jobs
program:
Sold as a way to create jobs while building
infrastructure and an environmentally sensitive economy, the stimulus
plan was drafted in haste by Democrats in Congress and then signed by
Mr. Obama on Feb. 17, 2009. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
was priced at $787 billion when enacted; the official estimate is now
more than $800 billion. In “Money Well Spent?” Michael Grabell of the
nonprofit news organization ProPublica explains where all those dollars
went...
After the act was signed into law, Vice President Joseph
Biden became a stimulus cheerleader and urged the local politicians who
would be receiving much of the money not to waste it on “stupid
things.” He was asking the impossible. But what is perhaps most
striking in this tale is not the waste of particular boondoggles but
the program’s failure to meet its own goals.
If the aim was to
create jobs, why were the funds not specifically directed to areas with
the highest unemployment? If the aim was to underwrite vital
construction projects, why did an Alaskan village called Ouzinkie,
population 167, receive a $15 million airport? “By contrast,” Mr.
Grabell notes, “major hubs such as Newark and Las Vegas didn’t get any
stimulus money. Atlanta, the busiest airport in the world, received
nothing in the first round of grants.”
With money carved out of
the stimulus for Democratic constituencies such as government workers
and for various anti-poverty programs, only about 10% of the spending,
or $80 billion, was devoted to infrastructure—and very little of that
total went to critical work. The political necessity to fund the
“shovel-ready” projects promised by the president meant that money
didn’t go to the bridges most in need of repair but to jobs that could
quickly clear the thicket of regulatory permitting. Repaving roads was
a typical activity; less than 12% of the infrastructure spending went
for work on bridges.
By 2016, voters were so fed up with the wasted
taxpayer investment, lackluster economy and diminished opportunity that
they took a shot on a businessman and rookie politician to serve as
president. If voters selected Donald Trump to end the “new normal” of
slow growth, it looks like they’ve been vindicated.
Good thing we don’t have to worry about Joe Biden running stimulus programs anymore!

MORE ON LIVING WITH THIS PANDEMIC.
This
article describes 5 important insights and treatments for COVID-19
which I have been reporting about on this RR site since they each
became known beginning in March. Particularly the "cytokine storm" and
its treatment should have been an early no-brainer.
That's why
panic and anxiety should have no place as we go forward living with
this challenge for many months to come. Will we all survive? Probably
not. But everything in life is a Risk-To-Benefit analysis.
So USE
COMMON SENSE: social distancing; an effective mask when that is not
possible; hand washing; and Avoiding Large Gatherings...where there
will always be some selfish idiots generally between the ages of teens

Professor of Pharmacy at U of Toronto update on advances made to deal with COVID-19
A professor of Pharmacy at U of Toronto sent this clearly worded update to his family.
For
this pandemic there’s a greater chance of survival for those getting
infected 3 months later like June 2020 than those who got infected 3
months earlier say February 2020. The reason for this is that Doctors
and scientists know more about Covid-19 now than 3 months ago and hence
are able to treat patients better. I will list 5 important things that
we know now that we didn’t know in February 2020 for your
understanding.
1. COVID-19 was initially
thought to cause deaths due to pneumonia - a lung infection and so
Ventilators were thought to be the best way to treat sick patients who
couldn’t breathe. Now we are realizing that the virus causes blood
clots in the blood vessels of the lungs and other parts of the body and
this causes the reduced oxygenation . Now we know that just providing
oxygen by ventilators will not help but we have to prevent and dissolve
the micro clots in the lungs. This is why we are using drugs like
Aspirin and Heparin ( blood thinners that prevents clotting) as
protocol in treatment regimens in June 2020.
2.
Previously patients used to drop dead on the road or even before
reaching a hospital due to reduced oxygen in their blood - OXYGEN
SATURATION. This was because of HAPPY HYPOXIA where even though the
oxygen saturation was gradually reducing the COVID-19 patients did not
have symptoms until it became critically less, like sometimes even 70%.
Normally we become breathless if oxygen saturation reduces below 90%.
This breathlessness is not triggered in Covid patients and so we were
getting the sick patients very late to the hospitals in February 2020.
Now since knowing about happy hypoxia we are monitoring oxygen
saturation of all Covid patients with a simple home use pulse oximeter
and getting them to hospital if their oxygen saturation drops to 93% or
less. This gives more time for doctors to correct the oxygen deficiency
in the blood and a better survival chance in June 2020.
3.
We did not have drugs to fight the corona virus in February 2020.
We were only treating the complications caused by it... hypoxia. Hence
most patients became severely infected. Now we have 2 important
medicines FAVIPIRAVIR & REMDESIVIR ... These are ANTIVIRALS that
can kill the corona virus. By using these two medicines we can prevent
patients from becoming severely infected and therefore cure them BEFORE
THEY GO TO HYPOXIA. This knowledge we have in JUNE 2020... not in
February 2020.
4. Many Covid-19 patients die not just
because of the virus but also due the patient’s own immune system
responding in an exaggerated manner called CYTOKINE STORM. This stormy
strong immune response not only kills the virus but also kills the
patients. In February 2020 we didn’t know how to prevent it from
happening. Now in June 2020, we know that easily available medicines
called Steroids, that doctors around the world have been using for
almost 80 years can be used to prevent the cytokine storm in some
patients.
5. Now we also know that people with hypoxia
became better just by making them lie down on their belly - known as
prone position. Apart from this a few days ago Israeli scientists have
discovered that a chemical known as Alpha Defensin produced by the
patients White blood cells can cause the micro clots in blood vessels
of the lungs and this could possibly be prevented by a drug called
Colchicine used over many decades in the treatment of Gout. So now we
know for sure that patients have a better chance at surviving the
COVID-19 infection in June 2020 than in February 2020, for sure.
Going
forward there’s nothing to panic about Covid-19 if we remember that a
person who gets infected later has a better chance at survival than one
who got infected early.
Let’s continue to follow precautions, wear masks and practice social distancing.

AND NOW, A PERSONAL / PROFESSIONAL REFLECTION.
In
1964, when I decided to join a political party, I joined the Democratic
Party. From then until 1990, I worked for the Party, including in
elected public office for 6 years (three terms). By then the Democratic
Party had morphed into something I could not recognize. So, holding my
nose, I joined the Republican Party.
My experience since then is
outlined on my web site, especially since 2003 on the Rapid Response
section of that site (www.asthma.drsprecace.com)
"Meanwhile,
back at the ranch", aka my life as a practising physician since 1957 -
and counting - I was a member of the American Medical Association
until 1990, when I realized that that august body had become an
obsequious shell of its former self in its efforts to "be at the
table"...the political table - while actually being relegated to under
the table in effectiveness for our public and professional health. To
that was added the American College of OB/GYN that came out supporting
Abortion! Another notable has become the American College of
Physicians, of which I am a FACP, with reliably "liberal" positions
arguably at variance with the large majority of its members.
Now
comes the New England Journal Of Medicine, in its Editorial for October
9,2020 (Linked below). Neither "scientific" nor actually measured in
the facts it presents - and omits - it presents as its position a
screed that greatly demeans itself. Henceforth, we must add it to the
growing list of prostituted "scientists'' and "science" that have so
declared themselves since the beginning of this election cycle: aka the
last 4 years.

Free citizens must protect themselves because police do not protect you
from crime; they just investigate the crime after it happens and then
call someone in to clean up the mess.
Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take a whoopin'!
A LITTLE GUN HISTORY
PLEASE DON'T THINK FOR A MOMENT, THAT THIS COULDN'T HAPPEN IN OUR COUNTRY ALSO !!!!!!

You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.
Guns
in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes,
gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.
With guns, we are 'citizens'; without them, we are 'subjects'.
During WW II, the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!
Gun owners in the USA are the largest armed forces in the World!
If you value your freedom, please spread this anti-gun control message to all of your friends.
The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense.
The sword is more important than the shield and skill is more important than either.
SWITZERLAND ISSUES A GUN TO EVERY HOUSEHOLD! SWITZERLAND'S GOVERNMENT ISSUES AND TRAINS EVERY ADULT IN THE USE OF A RIFLE.
SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!!
IT'S
A NO BRAINER! DON'T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX
DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY
TARGET.
I'm a firm believer in the 2nd Amendment! If you
are too, forward this. If you're not a believer, reconsider
the true facts. This is history; not what's being shown on TV,
sanctioned by our illustrious delusional leaders in Washington .
This should go for grandmas also. Do you have yours?

WOW. WHAT A TIME IN OUR ALWAYS CONSEQUENTIAL LIVES.
Today, a Gatling Gun Edition of Pot Pourri.
- See my most recent RR offerings about "the debate" and about COVID-19.
- "We
will be living with the virus indefinitely." (See Holman Jenkins
article in WSJ, September 30, 2020). AND THAT'S
A FACT!
- See Rudy Giuliani's interview on Fox, Oct. 4, 2020, 7 AM. GREAT.
- "Vote
as if your life depends on it": the last sentence of the October 4,
2020 article by Lisa McGinley, in The Day. IT DOES, ESPECIALLY
FOR YOUR CHILDREN.
- "The report of my death was an
exaggeration", as Mark Twain once noted. But David Collins has a point
in his column of October 3, 2020 in The Day regarding the "National
U.S. Coast Guard Museum. "I'm looking for leadership here". Since, for
so many reasons, the RCDC has failed to market Fort Trumbull, the
museum should be re-sited there. ASAP.
- See
the excellent Letter to the Editor published by Richard Golden in the
Oct. 2, 2020 edition of The Day, regarding the positions of our leaders
and "leaders" on the pandemic from the outset. Here are the facts, if
you care about such things.
- "Oceans absorb much more carbon
than previously thought, study finds". And forests, currently being
destroyed at a fierce rate world-wide, mainly by design in "third-world
countries", are our other greatest defense against global warming.
Meanwhile, we are urged to believe that Climate Change and Global
Warming our "Settled Science". NOT QUITE!
- Can we
Catholics be Christian / charitable...and not be Socialist /
Marxist? Pope Francis is making this progressively more
difficult.
- Here is a "Dog Bites Man" story that newspapers
are not supposed to treat as News: "AS VOTING BEGINS, OUR CHOICE
IS JOE BIDEN" (Editorial, The Day, Oct. 1, 2020).
- Now if you
really want a personal History of the last four tumultuous years, buy
and read: "The Tweets Of President Donald J. Trump" (Forefront Books),
from 1/20/2017 to 2/5/2020.

HURRAY!
Adrenocorticosteroids should have been part of the treatment of any but the mild cases beginning in March.

MORE FYI.
And
the comment about Juan Williams is right on point. After watching a
number of the Fox shows "The Five", I have never seen Williams do
anything but regurgitate the pap he has been spouting for years -
regardless of the topic at hand.

SATURDAY, October 3,
2020
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP HAS COVID-19 INFECTION.
That is not news. Nor was it entirely unexpected, in view of his position and responsibilities.
A fine analysis of this development appears in the WSJ Editorial for Oct. 3-4, 2020: "Trump's Positive Covid Test". It is worth a careful read.
What
I will note, however, is that living a good and productive life does
not come with avoidance of "lemons", but with making lemonade from
those inevitable lemons.
This is a lemon for the President. But: a)
if he recovers promptly and completely, together with protective
antibodies, he will have plenty of time to win the election next month;
or b) if he develops a substantial illness and recovers gradually -
with or without residua, he will know what to do on behalf of the
nation. Given the relevant experience that well over 90% of such
affected individuals recover completely, option "a" is highly likely -
and will likely work to his advantage.
That is what reveals strength of character and of leadership...making lemonade out of this lemon. I predict that outcome.
Meanwhile,
John Q. Public should continue to use common sense (social distancing,
effective masks when that is not possible, frequent hand washing and
avoidance of crowds or large groups - always likely to include
irresponsible idiots.
So, get out from under your bed, get your life back - and help bring your country back to good health.

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THIS PUBLISHED BEFORE?

How many coal plants are there in the world today?
Green New Deal???
The EU has 468 - building 27 more... Total 495
Turkey has 56 - building 93 more... Total 149
South Africa has 79 - building 24 more... Total 103
India has 589 - building 446 more... Total 1035
Philippines has 19 - building 60 more... Total 79
South Korea has 58 - building 26 more... Total84
Japan has 90 - building 45 more... Total 135
China has 2,363 - building 1,171 more... Total3,534
That’s 5,615 projected coal powered plants in just 8 countries.
USA has 15 - building 0 more...Total 15
And Democrat politicians with their "green new deal” want to shut down those 15 plants in order to "save” the planet.
This is EXCELLENT!! I knew the rough idea about the number of coal plants, but had not yet seen actual numbers until now.
This
makes the point. Whatever the USA does or doesn’t do won’t make a
Tinker’s Dam regarding CO2 unless the rest of the world, especially
China and India reduces coal-fired power plants as
well.
The whole “global warming” and
“climate change” gambits byDemocrats are to create a *supposedly*
sound, scientific basis to justify a federal government power-grab and
the passage of MORE laws to increase taxes and increased control of the
privately owned power industry and its distribution. Never forget
the *main* motivation they have!
“Oh, we will SAVE the planet!!” 100% Pure Bull
