RAPID
RESPONSE (Archives)...Daily Commentary on News of the Day
This is a new
section. It will
offer fresh,
quick reactions by myself to news and events of the day, day by day, in
this rapid-fire world of ours. Of course, as in military
campaigns,
a rapid response in one direction may occasionally have to be followed
by a "strategic withdrawal" in another direction. Charge that
to
"the fog of war", and to the necessary flexibility any mental or
military
campaign must maintain to be effective. But the mission will
always
be the same: common sense, based upon facts and "real politick",
supported
by a visceral sense of Justice and a commitment to be
pro-active.
That's all I promise.

Hello everyone. What a whirlwind here at the Custom House! Our next board meeting will be Wednesday, June 12, at 5 PM
Thought you might enjoy the presentation I made to the NL Rotary today, (attached). It is a recap of our activities since January 1, 2019. In each photo there is a small orange box with my notes, (which identify the photo), in the upper left of each photo.
THE NEW MUELLER - NADLER DOCTRINE: "GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT."
That's not what I learned in Law School. What I did learn is a lawyer's approach to representing a case: "If the Law is with you, argue the Law. If the Facts are with you, argue the Facts. If neither the Law nor the Facts are with you...YELL AND SCREAM." Any questions?

His
name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while
trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming
from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There,
mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and
struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what
could have been a slow and terrifying death The
next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse
surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced
himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. 'I want to repay you,' said the nobleman. 'You saved my son's life.' 'No,
I can't accept payment for what I did,' the Scottish farmer replied
waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the
door of the family hovel. 'Is that your son?' the nobleman asked. 'Yes,' the farmer replied proudly. 'I'll
make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my own
son will enjoy If the lad is anything like his father, he'll no doubt
grow to be a man we both will be proud of.' And that he did. Farmer
Fleming's son attended the very best schools and in time, graduated
from St Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become
known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the
discoverer of Penicillin. Years afterward, the same nobleman's son who was saved from the bog was stricken with pneumonia. What saved his life this time? Penicillin. The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill . His son's name? Sir Winston Churchill. Someone once said: What goes around comes around. Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching. Sing like nobody's listening. Live like it's Heaven on Earth.
AN IRISH FRIENDSHIP WISH: May there always be work for your hands to do; May your purse always hold a coin or two; May the sun always shine on your windowpane; May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain; May the hand of a friend always be near you; May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you. and may you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead.

Today,
I placed my Glock Model 21SF .45 cal. automatic pistol with laser on
the table right next to my kitchen door. I left its clip beside it,
then left it alone and went about my business. While
I was gone, the mailman delivered my mail, the next door neighbor mowed
the yard, a girl walked her dog down the street, and quite a few cars
stopped at the "stop" sign near the front of my house. After
about an hour, I checked on the gun It was quietly sitting there, right
where I had left it. It had not moved itself outside. It had not killed
anyone. Certainly, even with the numerous opportunities it had
presented to do that. In fact, it had not even loaded itself. Well
you can imagine my surprise, with all the hype by the Democrats and
their propaganda media, about how dangerous guns are and “How They”
kill people. Either the media is wrong, or I'm in possession of the
laziest gun in the world. The
United States is 3rd in murders throughout the world. But if you take
out just 5 'left-wing' cities: Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC, St
Louis and New Orleans -- the United States is 4th from the bottom, in
the ENTIRE world, for murders. These 5 cities are controlled by Democrats. They also have the toughest gun control laws in the USA. It would be absurd to draw any conclusions from this data, right? Well, I'm off to check on my spoons. I hear they're making people fat...

ON THIS, MEMORIAL DAY, 2019, I CHOOSE TO MEMORIALIZE THE AMERICA
THAT COULD BE - BUT ISN'T.
For this effort, I offer the following:
1) having grown up in the 1930's and 1940's, through the Great
Depression, World War II and its near-aftermath, when my friends and I
would stand on the corner in the Bronx, under the street light long
after it had turned on, discussing and arguing about the national and
world events reported that day - not sitting at home for hours texting
or FaceBooking friends and "friends" with no direct personal
interaction; and I have continued to do that well into my 80's.
2) "The Untold History
Of America", a multi-segment well-documented series on the
major events of American history in the last 100 years, directed and
narrated by Oliver Stone with his typical spins on the interpretation
of those events;
3) "The Great
Deformation: The Corruption of Capitalism in America", by
David A. Stockman (Public Affairs - Perseus Books Group, 2013);
4) "View From The Top",
a Review of the book "FireFighting", by Paul Krugman (in NYTimes Book
Review, May 5, 2019, p8).
It has been rightly noted that "nations do not have friends; they have
Interests". Rather, they have self-interests, from the efforts of a
small farming family in the Mid-West to survive, to the Robber-Barons
of the late19th century, to the national colonial interests implemented
by overt invasions or by covert actions of shadow agencies, or by the
unquenchable desire for MORE, at all costs, by Wall Street types. What
sets America apart has been the tenacity to pursue these goals within
the societal framework of individual Freedom. That has been what has
separated America from the totalitarian regimes of past and present
throughout the world. Thus, that has been - so far - what has allowed
America to pursue its more base instincts without losing its soul. And
we have. In the eyes of lesser and weaker peoples throughout the world,
America is not the "shining beacon on the hill".
But that is in danger of becoming a distinction without a difference.
America is in danger of losing its Freedom and its soul by inattention
to what is happening in the Federal Government...and also by apathy in
response to an intentional effort at totalitarianism pursued by the
Leftists out there. The current Trump administration is fighting
against that and - no surprise - is being strongly opposed.
Whether Americans want to become and be a "shining beacon" to the
world...or whether we want to pursue only our self-interests, we must
retain our Freedom, not a word but a Fact. That will require much more
individual attention in the 2020 Election than has been reflected in
the historic participation of only 60+- % of the voting public even in
national elections.
Americans have historically been divided in the past on many
issues...but never like this. What is at stake is the core of what it
is to be America. Its resolution will require a Fight. Only the
battle-ground and the weapons are now in question.

POPE
FRANCIS CONTINUES TO FLIRT WITH THE BASIC PROBLEM INHERENT IN THE
"RELIGION" OF ISLAM.
Islam is not only a Religion; it is a Secular Government, with secular
Sharia Law injecting itself throughout the lives of practising Muslims.
And that is what makes the acceptance and support of Muslims in
non-Muslim countries untenable. It is Sharia Law that is unacceptable.
This was the structure - and the inherent weakness - of the Catholic
Church for many centuries until the Laity refused to abide by that
structure, formalized in the Lateran Treaty in Italy.
I witnessed that first-hand in 1950 in the little town of Colonnella,
Abruzzi, Italy, my father's hometown. The entire Faithful went to Mass
on Sunday. When the priest left the altar to give his homily,
all the men left the church - to have a smoke. They returned when the
priest returned to the altar.
Among the several other flash points among the Laity that the Holy
Father is choosing to ignore - or to treat with "ambiguity", his
incursions into the secular life of Italy, Italians and the Faithful
everywhere with his broadsides about international migration and
migrants stand out as an unwise return to Church involvement in secular
life. For such inclinations, he will not be attacked. Worse, he will be
ignored - as we all go out "to have a smoke". Very disappointing.
IT'S A REACH, BUT...LET'S MEMORIALIZE THE DYING "FREE PRESS".
Freedom of the Press is a bedrock foundation of our American nation and of our Liberties. But
major components of the Press and of its Journalists have taken leave
of their professional responsibilities and of their senses - and have
gone rogue. Whether by omission, during the administrations of several
Democratic Presidents (FDR, Kennedy, LBJ, Clinton, Obama) or by
commission (the hounding of our duly elected current President), the
"mainstream press" has effectively lost the confidence and the trust of
major portions of the American people. This makes the American people
ripe for the rantings of despots and demagogues as we now see emanating
from the unhinged Left. See the excellent - if infuriating / demoralizing - book bursting with evidence of all of this: UNFREEDOM OF THE PRESS, by Mark R. Levin (Threshold Editions, 2019). Yes. Let's memorializing the dying "Free Press".

"CHAOS: A STATE OF UTTER CONFUSION".
SO SAYS WEBSTER'S COLLEGE DICTIONARY.
We are not quite there yet.
But in three arenas critical to the support of a stable Society, we are
close.
1) Regarding the role of the U.S. Supreme Court as the ultimate
interpreter of our U.S. Constitution, the issue of "Stare Decisis" is
the Court's approach to new law. See the following articles, especially
the one by Myron Magnet: "Thomas and Breyer's 'Stare' Contest"
(in WSJ May 23, 2019, Opinioin, pA19). This is an excellent tutorial on
the subject. See also "Liberals Who Cry Roe", (Editorial,
WSJ May 15, 2019, pA16.). Actually, that notorious case - and therefore
its progeny - should not even be considered for the application of
Stare Decisis. "Roe v. Wade" was a decision having no basis in Law, in
Medicine or in Ethics.
2) In the ethical foundation of over a billion people in this world -
the Catholic Church, Pope Francis appears intentionally to be
addressing areas of serious religious concern with "ambiguity". Big
Mistake, fostering Chaos among its followers at a critical time in its
2,000 year history. See the following articles:
a) "Papal Heresy Open Letter: Was It A Bridge
Too Far?", by Joan Desmond (in National Catholic Register,
May 26-June 8, p1).
b) "The Pope's Puzzling Pontificate",
by Father Raymond De Souza (ibid, p7).
3) The irresponsible approach being continued by Democratic / Leftist
federal legislators, following release of the Mueller Report, over two
years in preparation. There is no justification for this except crass
politics and a desperate effort to thwart investigation into the
probably illegal activities of segments of the FBI and of the
Intelligence community against the election of our President. This
borders on treason - and is promoting Chaos. We all have one chance to
resolve all of this peacefully: the 2020 election.

CYNICALLY AND HYPOCRITICALLY SPOUTED BY LEFTISTS AND THEIR

I can't; but I'll continue to do what I can.
1) "Public Education"
continues to be a barren desert, stupidly supported by its main
victims. See the following articles:
a) "Sanders Chooses
Teachers Unions Over Black Voters", by Jason L. Riley (in WSJ May 22,
2019, Opinion, pA17.
b) "An NAACP Revolt

d) "More Students

2) THE EFFORTS TO
LEGALIZE "RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA" ARE NOT STUPID, SINCE THEIR
PROPONENTS KNOW EXACTLY WHY THEY ARE DOING IT. BUT IT IS DEAD
WRONG.
See the following articles"
a) "Reefer Madness",
by physicians Michael Krinsky and Myron Genel (in Connecticut Medicine,
April, 2019, p179),
b) "Four State
Medical Society Presidents: No, No, No, No, To Recreational Marijuana"
(ibid).
3) THE "VACCINE
CONTROVERSY" SHOULD BE NO CONTROVERSY AT ALL. VACCINATIONS
FOR ALL CHILDREN SHOULD BE THE LAW IF THE CHILDREN WANT TO ATTEND
SCHOOLS.
See the article by Chris Powell entitled "End Vaccine Exemption And
Please Lock The Car" (in The Day Opinion, pB4).
4) MY CATHOLIC CHURCH
CONTINUES TO DISAPPOINT.
From the anti-climactic Synod this winter, to the recently released
draft of "Vatican Curial Reforms",
to the incomplete and anemic reaction to the burning of the Cathedral
of Notre Dame...while "hundreds of other French churches are being
quietly burned or damaged - in deliberate attacks". (See "France's
Other Burning Churches", National Catholic Register, May 12-25, 2019,

Pope Francis has evidently decided to be a care-taker instead of a
reformer: rearranging the deck chairs on the sinking Titanic. Very
Disappointing.

As the Italian peninsula, closely following Greece in the several
centuries BC, was the center of the world in the Roman centuries AD,
followed by the light of the Catholic Church during the Dark Ages, and
with the explosion of the Renaissance there in the 14 - 15th centuries
and beyond, Italy has maintained its place among nations as a center of
culture, style and the balanced life.
Now comes Italy as ground zero of European politics, present and future.
See: "Steve Bannon Is A Fan Of Italy's Donald Trump",

author, that relate directly to our own challenges and opportunities

HERE'S THE LATEST IN
REVERSE DISCRIMINATION: AN "ADVERSITY" SCORE.
The
real adversity is the result of Black and Minority students and their
"leaders" supporting the Teachers' Unions and their wholly - owned
subsidiary (the Democratic Party) in the charade that has been "public
school education" during the last forty years and their efforts to
thwart any reforms.
Stupid in the extreme. And they still haven't learned.

EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, MY OWN EQUANIMITY REQUIRES AN OPPORTUNITY TO
VENT.
This is one of those times. And, in case my postings have been in any
way ambiguous regarding my opinions, the following will
clarify.
The
roaring "50's following WW ll were followed by the dangerous '60's: The
Cold War; The Viet Nam War - the worst experience for this nation since
the Civil War, made much worse by the despicable lies fed us by our
"leaders"; the drug and sexual revolution; the understandable violent
reaction against "authority".
There
has followed what I then predicted would be two generations (about 20
years each) of citizens: horse's ass and son of horse's ass. To that
unfortunately accurate prediction I must now add: grandson of horse's
ass.
Unfortunately,
that very large population - encumbered by persistent maturation arrest
- gravitated to the Democratic Party, a group always willing to
distribute rosy and impossible promises in order to gain votes. The
worst example of that is the Black population that swallowed that
swill, especially related to what has been laughingly called "Public
Education", fiercely protected by the Teachers' Unions from any
meaningful reform. And most recently, that situation has been labled
"Adversity" for students. Damned Right! Especially for Blacks. When
will they Wake Up?
And
that brings us to our current surroundings: ignorant and arrogant
juveniles in their 30's and 40's who cannot relate to other humans
except through an I -Phone and "social" media, who attack all Faith
systems, who can't keep their clothes on and their legs together, who
call killing a baby in the womb a "health issue", who verbally and
physically attack anyone who disagrees with them - including in
colleges that are supposed to encourage thought, and who yet demand
Everything NOW AS AN ENTITLEMENT without regard to any concept of worth
or deserving or earning. And they demand all manner of irrational
national change - Now.
These
are the people surrounding us now - and who will out -vote us if we
don't watch out. If you and I win in the 2020 national elections...they
had better Shut Up. If we lose, they had better mature quickly.
Now, to quote my old Italian Piano professor: "CATCH ME WHAT I MEANS?"
I feel much better now.
GS
RR#4
THERE IS AN ITALIAN SAYING, ONE OF MANY IN A CULTURE WITH AN AGES-OLD
ORAL TRADITION.
In fact, you may sample some of these in my website section entitled
"Italian Sayings".
This one is usually uttered with a sense of frustration:
"Ma chi mi lo far' fare". "But who makes me do it?"
Not with me. With many decades of education, training and experience, I
make me do it, gladly.
So here is another wide-ranging pot pourri of observations and
opinions, with supporting articles.
Winston
Churchill stated that "democracy is the worst form of
government...except for all the rest." World history leading up to the
20th century proved that. But now there is a "Global Crisis of Democracy", as
outlined by Larry Diamond in the WSJ (May 18-19, 2019, Review, pC1).
Although the emphasis of this article is on foreign nations, we see it
with increasing frequency in the autocratic/totalitarian attitudes and
actions of the Leftists in our midst. Beware!
With
regard to other nations, America has not been able to uphold democracy
in the past except with resort to all-out war. That must not happen
with Venezuela or Cuba or even with some of our European allies and
"allies". America First and Always. The exception here is Israel, which
has earned our total and permanent protection.
Regarding
Russia, that country will always be opposed to America - its only means
of remaining relevant, a player on the world stage. But its military
and nuclear capability requires that we constantly engage them in
diplomacy and business. President Trump understands this fact.
Regarding
China, the same is true, with the added reality that China lies, cheats
and steals. Thus, our approach to China must be more robust and
confrontational. President Trump understands that too, to the chagrin
of greedy business interests that just want to be left alone to make
great profits off the backs of Americans and America's security
interests. That's at the heart of all the wailing and gnashing of
teeth. See: "A Better Way To Deal With Beijing",
by Robert B. Zoellick (in WSJ May 15, 2019, Opinion, pA17.
Regarding
North Korea, they will never give up its nuclear capability. Their
leader is right: that is the only thing protecting their current
political existence. But they can be constrained together with the
other nuclear nations. President Trump knows this, should level with
the American people on this matter...and should proceed accordingly.
Our
erstwhile "ally" Turkey is another matter, as long as their current
Muslim leader remains in power. A history lesson is helpful here. See: "When Turkey Destroyed Its Christians",
by Morris and Zeevi (in WSJ May 18-19, 2019, Review, pC4.) Turkey's
current and continuing actions, including in close cooperation with
Russia, may well warrant its expulsion from NATO.
Regarding
the entire Far East, including the everlasting enemies India and
Pakistan, the failed State of Iraq, the client State of Afghanistan
(controlled by the Taliban), the dictatorship of Syria, a client State
of Russia, and the religious dictatorship of Iran seeking to return to
the ancient powers of Persia, America must retain a credible presence
there - for our own self-interest. For it is there that World War lll
(or is it IV) will begin. The fact of Israel is a most welcome further
interest.
The
Immigration Crisis on our Southern Border has turned the old Monroe
Doctrine on its head. Latin America is controlling us. That must stop.
President Trump understands this. The craven Democrats' actions -
bordering on treason in this regard - must not be allowed to hold sway.
That's
it for now. Stay Tuned.

JUST SO YOU KNOW...
GS
The
situation on America’s college campuses is becoming more dire every day
as left-wing protesters (and even professors and administrators) try to
shut up anyone they don’t agree with.
They see the free pass the
media is giving to "responsible adults" like Rep. Sims of Pennsylvania,
who harassed three young pro-life students for simply praying outside a
Planned Parenthood, and are becoming more emboldened than ever to
shutdown pro-lifers.
And no one has a bigger target on their backs on America’s college
campuses today than Students for Life.
Just
this Spring Semester, our pro-life groups have documented over
two-dozen cases of vandalization against our pro-life displays on
campus.
Even after President Trump invited us to the White House
for his signing of an Executive Order that forced universities to
choose between allowing free speech for groups like ours or risking
federal research dollars, we’re still being targeted.
In fact,
the banner we set up to advertise my final “Lies Feminists Tell” speech
of the semester at Western Washington University (which had my face on
it) was just burned on campus.
And george, when I spoke on the
campus on Thursday night. It was intense. We had over 200 students show
up, the vast majority opposing me. Several times during my
speech, the police had to remove protestors.
After the radical
protesters I encountered on my “Lies Feminists Tell” tour at the
University of California-Berkeley who threateningly stood behind me
during my entire speech holding coat hangers and the police calling in
bomb-sniffing dogs to sweep the room prior to my speech at Cal
State–Fullerton because of threats, I don’t dare step foot on campus
without having private security or a large campus police force.
Planned
Parenthood’s allies know they can’t win the argument over abortion –
not with outrageous claims like a baby born alive during a botched
abortion is, in fact, “not a baby” as one student at Boston College
tried to tell me.
So they’re doing everything they can to stop us from even being able to
argue at all!
That includes everything from vandalizing our displays to resorting to
violence against our courageous pro-life leaders!
As you’ll see below, I’ve written out just a handful of incidents our
student groups have faced recently.
As
you read over the list at the end of my email (which is sadly growing
nearly every day), will you please keep our pro-life students who are
on the front lines in your prayers?
Pro-life students are
finding that their First Amendment rights are being stripped away. If
they’re not being shouted down by rabid pro-abortion protesters at one
of our peaceful events, our groups are being stonewalled behind the
scenes by bureaucrats in college administrations.
The Abortion Lobby has always seen college campuses as “their turf.”
But
after the election of President Trump put defunding Planned Parenthood
back on the table and seeing the work that this Pro-Life Generation is
doing to change hearts and minds, pro-abortion activists are doing
everything in their power to maintain their iron grip on college
campuses.
That means stooping to the kinds of violence and intimidation tactics I
just laid out for you.
And
as they see their own school’s administration standing idly by – or
even tacitly supporting their vandalism – they’ll only become more
emboldened
We can’t let this happen.
These courageous young women and men are truly on the front lines of
the culture war for Life.

IF YOU LIKE THIS, I'VE GOT A BRIDGE I WOULD LIKE TO SELL YOU.
WHO KNEW. I DIDN'T.
Yet another vital organ system failing in the Body Politic.
Unless radical surgery is allowed to take place, the prognosis is
guarded for saving America.
WHETHER YOU ARE A MEMBER OF THE TEA PARTY OR NOT,
and
I am not, this all rings true. The Leftists, the militant Blacks, and
now most of the Democratic Party are the most Racist groups, given
their constant emphasis on Racism as their "raison d'etre".

"MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE RANCH..."
no meaningful legislation is getting done except through Executive
action.
Does this mean we need "...change to U.S. system of government"?
See the AP article by Ricardi and Swanson entitled
"Poll Finds Hunger for Change to U.S. System
Of Government", published in The Day, May 2, 2019.
I
think not. What we need is predictable change in the persons
representing us in that government - through TERM LIMITS - and change
in the now common situation of individuals spending entire working
careers in powerful but unelected positions in the massive bureaucracy
covered under Administrative Law.
There is much to be done. We could begin with the proposal put forward
in a good article unfortunately spoiled by its title: "Will Republicans Protect Trump Or U.S.
Democracy?" (Editorial, The Day, May 2, 2019).

MORE ON DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL HYSTERIA...AND THE REAL PERSONAL RISKS
THEY FACE.
See the WSJ Editorial, May 2, 2019, entitled: "A Real Attorney General" (Opinion,
pA16).
These
partisans have gone way beyond reality and way beyond healthy
expressions of emotion. In fact, they may never be able to find their
way back. That's called "Psychosis". The last straw may be when
President Trump wins a second term.
Meanwhile, don't you loyal
Americans get lazy on me now. Pay Attention. Pass the word on. Work to
get legal voters to Vote. It's certainly not to early for "...all good
persons to come to the aid of their country."

OK. LET'S LOOK AT SEVERAL DEMOCRATIC POSITIONS...AND THEIR FALSITY.
Joe
Biden's recent claim that we have nothing to fear from China, the
nation that has become our greatest diplomatic, economic and military
adversary. Could this be related to the fact that Biden and his son
recently closed a billion dollar deal with China for the benefit of his
son?
The
allegation that the Trump tax reform legislation benefits only the
rich. See Newt Gingrich's article on this subject, LINKED HERE.
The
result of Democrats intentional surrender of our national sovereignty
at our borders - solely for their hoped - for political
benefit...persistent actions and inactions that approach the definition
of Treason.
Democrats'
40 year support for a failed public education system and obstruction to
all efforts to reform it - all with the effect of keeping their Stupid
followers in bondage - True Racism.
The
Democratic call for "Reparations for Slavery", a non-starter if there
ever was one, except to produce real enmity among the Races...True
Racism again. See "The Danger Of Debating Reparations for Slavery", by
Lance Morrow (in WSJ May 3, 2019, Opinion, pA15).
Democratic
full-throat support for the abomination of Abortion and of killing
babies even born at birth. What else do you need to support the
effective decertification of the Democratic Party at the next election?
"Medicare
for All, and the "One Payor System": another Democratic effort at
totalitarian control of all the levers of public life. See: "'Medicare
For All' Isn't Medicare", by Robert. C. Pozen (in WSJ May 2, 2019,
Opinion, pA17). See also "DOJ Lays Out Stance Against Health Law". by
Kendal and Armour (in WSJ ibid, pA4).
Democratic
efforts to control all public discourse through Fake News and through
intimidation and punishment for deviations. See "Segregation By Design
On Campus", by Wood and Pierre (in WSJ April 30, 2019, Opinion, pA17).
And
more...much more.
START WORKING NOW TO TAKE BACK OUR NATION IN 2020.
It can still be done at the ballot box, but not for long.
