quick reactions by myself to news and events of the day, day by day, in
this rapid-fire world of ours. Of course, as in military
campaigns,
a rapid response in one direction may occasionally have to be followed
by a "strategic withdrawal" in another direction. Charge that
to
"the fog of war", and to the necessary flexibility any mental or
military
campaign must maintain to be effective. But the mission will
always
be the same: common sense, based upon facts and "real politick",
supported
by a visceral sense of Justice and a commitment to be
pro-active.
That's all I promise.

HAPPY EASTER...NOW FROM A VERY HUMAN PERSPECTIVE. Two articles in today's news draw attention to Life as it is today, after over 2,000 years of Jesus. One
is about the words of Pope Francis, laced with sadness, caution and
also Hope and directed to peoples' Humanity and Free Will. The other
is an interview with David McCullough, arguably our time's greatest
historian, emphasizing the lessons of History over "politics". But the word "politics", from the Greek "politos", means "people". And
the author and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson made a very telling
statement: "There is properly no History. There is only Biography". The message here in considering the mean, craven and God-less times we now live in: We are not "victims", bound by History and powerless before the Future. We
are persons "created in the image and likeness of God" and endowed with
Free Will. What we do is what we choose to do; and the Outcome is Our
Responsibility, and ours alone. So: STOP WHINING, STOP WAITING...AND MAKE GOOD HAPPEN. Create your own resurrection from the tomb in which we now find ourselves. The Lord's own Resurrection has shown us that it can be done. And ALWAYS HOPE.
THE "MARCH MADNESS" GAME OFFERED ON SUNDAY EVENING, BETWEEN KANSAS AND DUKE, WAS MUCH THE BETTER TV FARE. But that was followed by an opportunity for all of us to witness pornography. Whether "Stormy Daniels" was telling the truth - on this occasion - I can't tell. Regarding
the alleged encounter with Donald Trump many years ago: she was clearly
ready; and he engaged in a sordid and despicable act as a married man.
What I do not believe is the alleged "threat", right out of "The
Godfather". What I know is the medical truism taught in first year medical school: "Pis and Pus Must Come Out." So
let's wait. And meanwhile, let's remember the sordid actions of three
other married men - who were all Presidents of the United States at
those times: Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John Kennedy and William
Clinton. And: in The Law, there is a term and Motion called a Demurrer. Put simply, it says: "SO WHAT?" This has Nothing to do with now - President Trump's term(s) in office. "Can You Hear Me Now?"

This should be read in context with my earlier Rapid Response offering

Densely
packed with facts supporting the reality she diagnoses, her conclusion
- and mine over many years - is a grave risk facing all of us today.
"That
belief that political force determines objective reality has
characterized totalitarian regimes worldwide and throughout history -
regimes that are responsible for untold amounts of human misery. That
mindset is dangerously inconsistent with the kind of free society
Americans have painstakingly built and defended over many centuries, at
the cost of blood and treasure. Perhaps we no longer want such a
society. But we relinquish it at our peril."
SO MUCH
IDIOCY. SO LITTLE TIME TO RESPOND.

Waterboarding, if monitoring the blood O2
saturation, is not "torture" if used under extreme necessity - as was
the case in the world following 9/11.
3) "The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental
Health Experts Assess A President".
Remember
the "Goldwater Rule": an amendment to the American Psychiatric
Association rules barring a member from offering a professional opinion
about a person he or she has never examined.
4) The breathless and hyperbolic Editorial in the NYTimes (March 24,
2018) entitled "John Bolton Really Is That Dangerous".
NOT!
I have been waiting for him, a 30 year veteran of service in the
highest levels of government and in the world AS IT IS, to be
brought into this Administration for the last year. As a sample of his
spot-on insights, see the article in the same edition of The Times, by
Bret Stevens:

There is
an old saying: "Don't argue with an idiot. People may not see the
difference". But I must take that risk...since the Idiots are taking
over the asylum.

In their infinite wisdom,
the United States’ founders created the Electoral College to ensure the
STATES were fairly represented. Why should one or two densely populated
areas speak for the whole of the nation?
The following list of statistics has been making the rounds on the
Internet. It should finally put an end to the argument as to why the
Electoral College makes sense.
Do share this. It needs to be widely known and understood.
There are 3,141 counties in the United States.
Trump won 3,084 of them.
Clinton won 57.
There are 62 counties in New York State.
Trump won 46 of them.
Clinton won 16.
Clinton won the popular vote by approx. 1.5 million votes.
In the 5 counties that encompass NYC, (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan,
Richmond & Queens)
Clinton received well over 2 million more votes than Trump. (Clinton
won 4 of these counties; Trump won Richmond)
Therefore these 5 counties alone, more than accounted for Clinton
winning the popular vote of the entire country.
These 5 counties comprise 319 square miles.
The United States comprises 3,797,000 square miles.
When you have a country that encompasses almost 4 million square miles
of territory, it would be ludicrous to even suggest that the vote of
those who inhabit a mere 319 square miles should dictate the outcome of
a national election.
Large, densely populated Democrat cities (NYC, Chicago, LA, etc.) DO
NOT and SHOULD NOT speak for the rest of our country!
But that’s where the majority of our nation’s problems foment.

His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while

and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what

stricken with pneumonia.
What saved his life this time? Penicillin.
The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill . His son's name?

17-18, 2018, I now offer one article from the NYTimes Sunday Review of
March 18. As usual, most of the other articles and editorials in this
weekly section continue to be fevered Jeremiads against President
Trump.

But this one is very good: factual, sensitive, even sympathetic:

severely punished.
If the police officer or prosecutor has lied, but the target of the
lies is not falsely convicted, he should lose his job and any pension.
If the target is falsely convicted and serves time and/or financial
penalty, the officer or prosecutor should be made to serve the same
penalty.

Because this seems to be another attempt to fracture the melting pot of
peoples that has been the greatest strength of America into a divergent
collection of different racial and ethnic groups all vying against each
other for advantage.
This of course would be entirely consistent with Leftist Democratic
despotic efforts to "divide and conquer". But such efforts must be
defeated. And, as the article clearly points out, most "ethnic"
individuals and groups want no part of that.

A way to bring the world's people together - and a way to another world
war.
TIME FOR A RE-BOOT!
THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
Whether you are a Catholic or not, The Church stands as a Lighthouse
during a storm, regardless of what port you are trying to reach.
This article reflects the ferment that the Church and its Laity (ie.
"The Body of the Church") have gone through since Pope Paul VI's 1968
encyclical "Humane Vitae", mainly about non-abortifacient birth
control...and which it is now going through after Pope Francis's
encyclical "Amoris Laetitia", about the modern family and
relationships: marriage, divorce, sexuality....
Strict Conservatives in the Church want no dialogue on these
subjects...and are afraid of such dialogue. Genuine Christian leaders
in the Church recognize that such dialogue, including ambiguity and
personal flexibility, by Clergy and Laity alike, is not only necessary
but is required of a Faith founded upon mercy and forgiveness.
So, whatever your Religion or belief structure, join the fray.
Somewhere, Wisdom will be found.
IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE.
Today, we are in danger from despotic forces, as usual from the Left,
that wish to control us and to reign in our freedoms.
Two examples, although not presented overtly in that way, are described
in the following articles.

IT'S ALL ABOUT CONTROL!
CALL OF THE WILD: DINNER IS SERVED.
Adam and I had a "near Bear experience" 30 years ago when we and a
hunting party went up into the Thoroughfare of the Absaroka
Mountains, about 40 miles outside of Cody, Wyoming and about
9,000 feet up. A bear had visited the site of our camp the night before
we got there and had been driven off. We were in tents - but we at
least had the horses to warn us if the bear had returned. We also slept
with a .44 Magnum by my side. The next day we reached the Continental
Divide and Two Ocean plateau, a tiny stream with two courses: one
leading to the Pacific Ocean and one to the Atlantic
Ocean...eventually. Unforgettable.
ONE GOOD RESULT OF THREE CONSECUTIVE NOR'EASTERS IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO
READ.
And once again: "PAST IS PROLOGUE".
"THE FEDERALIST PAPERS" is a compendium of the 85 newspaper articles
written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, written in
haste and under the pressure of possible dissolution of the
recently United 13 States in the 1780's fighting over a replacement for
the Articles of Confederation developed after the American Revolution.
They were published under the rubric "Publius". The basic conflict was
similar to that of today's America: States vs. Central Government. All
highly relevant to many of today's conflicts, "Federalist No.
10" might be read first. As described by Professor Andrew
Trees, one of the main examples that this effort should provide to our
blighted rhetoric of today is "where civility and reasoned argument
reigned...its remarkably high-minded and civil tone of impartial and
judicious reasoning", despite the fevered temper of those times.
Of course, lest we become too optimistic, check out "THE WIT AND WISDOM
OF MARK TWAIN". Although universally considered a great and good man,
Samuel Langhorne Clemens had a low regard for human nature.
"The human race consists of the dangerously insane and such as are not."
"Man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to."
"Such is the human race. Often it does seem such a pity that Noah and
his party did not miss the boat."
"Man was made at the end of the week's work, when God was tired."
Nevertheless, let us keep trying...

UNBELIEVABLE. BUT YOU GOTTA BELIEVE...
I guess the Brits really haven't improved much since they lost the
American Revolution to a bunch of backwoodsmen and their wives.
After being interviewed by
the school administration, the prospective teacher said “Let
me see if I’ve got this right”.
You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their
disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their
dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages and instill in them a love
for learning.
You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on
drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their
sense of self-esteem and personal pride.
You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship,
sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a
check book, and apply for a job.
You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of
antisocial behavior, and ensure that they all pass their final exams.
You also want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of
their handicap and communicate regularly with their parents in English,
Arabic or any other language, by letter, telephone, newsletter, and
report card
You want me to do all this with a small amount of equipment, a bulletin
board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies
me for "New Start."
You want me to do all this, and then you tell me.....
I CAN NOT wear a necklace with a little cross, mention God, or say
"Merry Christmas" because someone might take offense? "
Well, you know what you can do with your job........
This should be posted in every school in America and all countries.
Think about it!
If Muslims can pray anywhere, why are Christians banned from praying in
public and from erecting religious displays on their holy days?
What happened to our National Day of Prayer?
It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God.
Therefore, I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a
problem in having 'God' in our education system or the Lord's Prayer
said in our government, schools or public meetings.
I believe it's time we stand up for what we believe!

ABOUT "WWW": IMPORTANT AND INTERESTING.
And what about the fact that "INTERNET SECURITY" IS AN OXYMORON?
IN DESCRIBING THE MODUS OPERANDI OF PRESIDENT TRUMP,
this author and his editors would do well, as "nabobs of negativity",
to consider this:
"CRAZY LIKE A FOX".
"I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE".
Well, I'm decades beyond "mad as hell", and I haven't ever been taking
it.
As the saying goes: "To give is better than to receive".
Today there are three subjects that deserve "giving".
1) Physicians are all "created equal". They just don't stay that way.
When
I started out as a physician 60 years ago, I had the quaint idea that
all colleagues were approximately equally good, at least A's and
B's. WRONG. There are a lot of C's and a few D's'.
Fortunately I have never found an F.
Without
getting into the fact that today there are a lot of individual
delusional "Leftists" among physicians, the problem is compounded when
physicians join Organizations. In some cases, the whole is definitely
not greater than the sum of its parts. That's what prompted me to leave
the AMA in 1990 after 30 years of membership. And that is what is
giving me serious qualms about my decades - long Fellowship in the
American College of Physicians. Group-Think is highly
contagious...especially in groups.
Some examples are in order.
Recently,
the American College of Cardiology came out with "new" guidelines for
proper blood pressure control, citing 150/90 as adequate.
Recently, a Diabetes organization proposed that proper diabetes control
could entail a Hemoglobin A1C of 7-8.
A few years ago, some urologic groups proposed that checking PSA's was
not generally necessary.
In all of these cases, one central motivation was the misguided desire
of some physicians to become economists.
And in all of these cases, practicing physicians - who actually take
care of people - have objected and refuse to follow.
BEWARE: "The life you save may be your own".
2) KILLING OUR CHILDREN. WAKE UP!
See

are two families: "John Legal" and "Juan Illegal". Both
families
have two parents, two children, and live in California. John Legal
works in construction, has a Social Security Number and makes
$25.00/hour with taxes deducted. Juan Illegal also works in
construction, has NO Social Security Number (SSN obtained
fraudulently), and gets paid $10.00 cash/hour "under the
table".
Ready? Now, pay close attention . . . John Legal: $25.00/hr.

hours = $1000.00/week, or $52,000/year. Now, take 30% away
for
state and federal tax; John Legal now has $31,231. Juan
Illegal:
$10.00/hr. x 40 hours = $400.00/week, or $20,800/year. Juan Illegal
pays no taxes. Juan Illegal now has $20,800.

John Legal pays medical and dental insurance with limited coverage for
his family at $600.00/mo., or $7,200/ yr. John Legal now has $24,031
Juan Illegal has full medical and dental coverage through the state and
local clinics and emergency hospitals at a cost of $0 per
year.
Juan Illegal still has $20,800. John Legal makes too much
money
and is not eligible for food stamps or welfare. John Legal
pays
$500 per month for food, or $6,000/yr. John Legal now has
$18,031. Juan Illegal has no documented income and is
eligible
for food stamps, WIC, and Welfare. Juan Illegal still has
$20,800. John Legal pays rent of $1,200/mo., or
$14,400/yr.
John Legal now has 9,630. Juan Illegal receives a $500/mo.
Federal Rent Subsidy. Juan Illegal pays out that $500/mo., or
$6,000/yr. Juan Illegal still has $20,800. John
Legal pays
$200/mo, or $2,400/yr. for car insurance. Some of that is
Uninsured Motorist insurance. John Legal now has
$7,231. Juan Illegal says, "We don't need no
stinkin'
insurance!" and still has $20,800. John Legal has to make his
$7,231 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, etc. Juan Illegal
has
to make his $20,800 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, and what he
sends out of the country every month.
• On Jan
1, 2014, Obama Care fully kicks in. John Legal's employer
lays
off several of his helpers in order to bring the number of employees
down enough to drop health insurance coverage. That means
John
Legal has to work harder and longer to compensate for the layoffs, plus
John Legal has to purchase Obama Care which has an out of pocket
expense of $850 for him and his family. That comes to
$10,200/yr. John Legal is way in the hole. Juan
Illegal and
his family receive Medicaid and receives Obama Care as a co-pay at no
expense to him. Juan Illegal still has 20,800 minus SOME
living
expenses and what he sends back home to help his extended family until
they can get into the US under automatic legal immigration granted when
Juan Illegal becomes Legal. John Legal now works overtime on
Saturdays or gets a part time job after work. Juan Illegal
has
nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family. John
Legal's
and Juan Illegal's children both attend the same elementary
school. John Legal pays for his children's lunches, while
Juan
Illegal's children get a government sponsored lunch. Juan
Illegal's children have an after school ESL program. John
Legal's
children go home. Now, when they reach college age, John Legal's kids
may not get into a State school and may not qualify for scholarships,
grants or other tuition help, even though John Legal has been paying
for State schools through his taxes, while Juan Illegal's kids "go to
the head of the class" because they are a minority. John
Legal
and Juan Illegal both enjoy the same police and fire services, but John
paid for them and Juan did not.
• Do you get
it, now? If you vote for or support any politician that
supports
illegal aliens, you are part of the problem. Thank God we have Donald
Trump as President and not a criminal named Hitlary. God

you wondered why the Clinton Foundation folded so suddenly after
Hillary was no longer in a position of influence? Perhaps this summary

Meetings $12,000,000.00
Net assets/fund balances (line 22) $332,471,349.00
So
it required 486 people, who were paid $34.8 million, plus $91.3 million
in fees and expenses, to give away $5.1 MILLION! And they called this a
CHARITY?
This is one of the greatest white-collar crimes ever
committed. And just think, one of the participants was a
former
president and one wanted to be elected President of the United
States. If justice was truly served, they would both be in
prison.

In the last couple of decades, Vitamin D has been found to be important
in many body functions besides bone health. This article points to
another likely connection.
2) Probably a majority of people have
Vitamin D levels below the minimum considered adequate (30-100).
Certainly that is true of my patients.
Therefore, all should
have their blood 25-OH Vitamin D level drawn and reviewed with their
physician with the above in mind. In addition, it is now recognized
that replacement should be with Vitamin D3 rather than with Vitamin D2.

Psychiatry has done its best - but not enough - in dealing
with
the tens of millions of mentally ill, even those who can get into a
psychiatrist's office for a "twenty minute hour" and a sack of
psychotropic medicines. At least it should be in favor of reporting the
patients deemed to be a serious risk to others, this trumping its
obligations to professional confidentiality for the individual.
Regarding
genetic testing for the general public. Beware what you ask for! See an
excellent article on this important subject: "Genetics: To Test or Not
To Test? That Is The Question" (www.medicalbag.com, March 7, 2018).
Regarding
the future of Seaside Regional Center. Three good articles have
recently been published in The Day (March 5,6, 2018). Please pay
attention to this important issue. In my opinion, the Preservationists
and David Collins have the better approach. You don't sell to private
individuals the people's property, whether it is Seaside, or
Lighthouses, or Plum Island, or Western National Monuments or National
Parks.
A new term has been coined to subvert the promise of
"Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" : "Structural Violence,
coined to describe a type of indirect violence manifested as unequal
power and unequal life changes between specific population subsets..."

Folks, not its guarantee. You might try pursuing it by
beginning
with a Good education, not the schlock that you've accepted in many
areas of public education during the last several decades.

Trump, Tariffs, Possible Trade Wars... "The Art Of The Deal", and
negotiation strategies. Do you remember this? "The Business of America
is Business", by "Engine Charlie Wilson" in the 1950's. Business, no
matter what, no matter who loses...so long as they win, especially in
open Global Trade. WELL, NO! Not this time. We're in business
to
MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.

IT LOOKS LIKE GOV. MALLOY IS ALREADY REHEARSING FOR A LEFTIST
NOMINATION...FOR SOMETHING.
REGARDING
SCHOOL SAFETY...
The Day article linked here is a good summary of current deliberations,
but IT IS ALL ABOUT REACTIVE, DEFENSE POLICY.
That has gotten scores of students and their teachers killed and maimed.
The only ultimate Defense against a determined shooter with assault
weapons is a
PRO-ACTIVE, OFFENSE POLICY.
If
all America had during the half-century of Cold War was "Duck and
Cover", we would all have been in gulags or in the after-life.
Only
concealed-carry by some trained teachers and administrators will change
the calculus in favor of the kids. And that means not scatter-shot but
a head-shot to stop the trigger-finger.
Sorry, but that's the world we live in, if you want to keep our next
generation alive.
When
I was in the Army Medical Corps, we physicians were given a choice:
either a .45 hand-gun or a Carbine as our personal weapon to protect
our patients in the field. Would I have used it? You Bet!
Many
civilians, like teachers and administrators, are reluctant to get into
this. In fact, in the 1970's, I had trouble getting teachers to agree
to have and if necessary to use Epi-Pens for their students who might
need such care.
Well, your students need THIS care now. The lives you save may well be
theirs and yours.
THIS ARTICLE QUOTING UCONN RANDY EDSALL IS GOLDEN!
But it doesn't go far enough...or soon enough.
Football
is a risky "collision-sport" that should be banned before high school
and much more highly restricted then and throughout college years.
I
refer here to the health and safety consequences. I will leave it to
good men like Coach Edsall to call out the greed, the mendacity
regarding "academic requirements"...and the just plain stupidity of the
adults, especially the parents. WHERE ARE THE PARENTS?
And for
those parents who want to give their kids "a chance for a better life":
a) "Something where less than one percent go on to continue their
football career after college"; b) many if not most will have missed a
real college education; and c) too many will go into a tough world with
damaged brains and bodies.
My wife and I raised 5 children, including three strapping boys, with
numerous Athletic and Academic Letters among them...
and with NO FOOTBALL. They are all doing very well in life.
IN THIS ERA WHEREIN NOTHING IS SACRED, WHERE NOTHING IS
CONSIDERED OF LASTING VALUE, WHERE SO MUCH IS SCHLOCK,
I anticipated this to be another example.
But I was wrong.

But there is another body that must be monitored: The Administrative.

Too much power in unelected, poorly supervised and self-perpetuating
hands.
OUR MARCH NOR'EASTER: JUST THE RIGHT ENVIRONMENT FOR THINKING ABOUT
HEALTH CARE.
Health
Care delivery in this country is in decline while its costs increase.
Anyone who does not recognize this must be Really Healthy.
Evidence
of this fact can be recognized through the plight of physicians,
emergency rooms and hospitals...and through the ever - increasing
incursions of payors and of regulators.
What can be done to
reverse this sickness? a) Motivate physicians through fair
reimbursements, fewer demands for electronic health records in clinical
medicine, reduced regulations - especially stupid ones, reduced
reliance on emergency rooms and hospitals for care that can be given in
the home, and Tort Reform to minimize reliance on Defensive Medicine.
And
then there are the developing practices of Telemedicine and "Virtual
Medical Practice"...if you don't mind the loss of personal
relationships - and the loss of your personal information occasionally.
Without effective change, your Health is a terrible thing to lose.
