RAPID
RESPONSE (Archives)...Daily Commentary on News of the Day
This is a new section. It will
offer fresh,
quick reactions by myself to news and events of the day, day by day, in
this rapid-fire world of ours. Of course, as in military
campaigns,
a rapid response in one direction may occasionally have to be followed
by a "strategic withdrawal" in another direction. Charge that to
"the fog of war", and to the necessary flexibility any mental or
military
campaign must maintain to be effective. But the mission will
always
be the same: common sense, based upon facts and "real politick",
supported
by a visceral sense of Justice and a commitment to be pro-active.
That's all I promise.

NON-CARBON RENEWABLE ENERGY:
Is its history so far a testament to the limitations of man's Reason?
Or is it another example of the power of the Carbon - based industries
(coal, oil, fracking...) to influence our "leaders"?
For a very long time, my vote has been for Nuclear Power: now fission
and then fusion.
Here is a well -presented "Apologia Pro Vita Sua" for President Obama.
There is only one problem: in each of the areas allegedly addressed and
even allegedly solved, what the Obama Administration has done is to
say:
"TAKE TWO ASPIRIN AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING".
That is to say: Obama has addressed symptoms, without having taken a
careful History and without having done a careful Physical Examination.
The result is analogous to the truism: "Justice Delayed, Justice
Denied", which we all know all too well. In this case, it is
"Diagnosis Delayed, Patient Deteriorated".
Let's look at the alleged "transformations".
1) ObamaCare: a Christmas Tree of Wants with no attention paid to true
Health Care reforms needed. This is leaving the Health Care System
reeling, patients receiving short shrift masking as necessary health
care, and the general public becoming impoverished with out-of-pocket
and massively rising insurance costs.
2) Public Education: a lot more of bureaucracy and testing (including
the ridiculous "new, new math"), without touching the corrosive
impediments constantly placed by Teachers' Unions for the last three
decades in the way of common sense reforms for a failed system and
failed millions of students.
3) The Environment: a slightly better grade here, for effort if not for
results. "Where's the Beef?" The environment continues to be despoiled
by past and present mining technology and carbon-based energy
production. Our "leaders" continue to pay off their donors and to avoid
LEADING their constituents to an understanding of the current benefits
of Nuclear Energy: now through fission and soon through fusion. They
can't even get Harry Reid's favorite mountain done.
4) National Security and Foreign Affairs: A DISASTER. All Wrong,
and on the way to World War lll, with our soldiers once again training
with broomsticks, as after Pearl Harbor. Too much to go into here; but
check out my Rapid Response section on my web site
(www.asthma-drsprecace.com).
AND WORST OF ALL, PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS BEEN A DIVIDER, NOT A UNITER, to
the extent that the elections of 2016 could also be "transformative"
for this nation - in the worst possible way.
As President Bush famously said during "Katrina": "YOU'RE DOING A GREAT
JOB, BROWNIE".

THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF
2016 WILL BE AS IMPORTANT FOR AMERICA AS WERE THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
AND THE CIVIL WAR.
And it is personally gratifying to see that a long-time respected
observer of the national scene has come to the same conclusion.
See: "AMERICA IS SO IN PLAY", by Peggy Noonan, in WSJ Saturday -

This is a MUST READ! And it must be read by our children and

A Doctor-Assisted
Disaster for Medicine As a physician in
Oregon, I have seen the dire effect of assisted-suicide laws on
patients and my profession. ENLARGE Photo: Getty

Toffler Aug. 17, 2015
7:11 p.m. ET Since the voters
of Oregon narrowly legalized physician-assisted suicide 20 years ago,
there has been a profound shift in attitude toward medical care—new
fear and secrecy, and a fixation on death. Well over 850 people have
taken their lives by ingesting massive overdoses of barbiturates
prescribed under the law. Proponents claim the system is working well
with no problems. This is not true.
As a professor of
family medicine at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland,
as well as a licensed physician for 35 years, I have seen firsthand how
the law has changed the relationship between doctors and patients, some
of whom now fear that they are being steered toward assisted suicide.
In one case a
patient with bladder cancer contacted me. She was concerned that an
oncologist treating her might be one of the “death doctors,” and she
questioned his motives. This was particularly worrying to her after she
obtained a second opinion from another oncologist who was more positive
about her prognosis and treatment options. Whichever of the consultants
was correct, such fears were never an issue before.
Under Oregon’s
law, a patient can request lethal drugs only if he has a terminal
illness and less than six months to live. However, it is nearly
impossible to predict the course of an illness six months out, and many
patients given such prognoses live full, rewarding lives long past six
months.
The law requires
that patients be referred for psychological examination if the doctor
suspects they have depression or mental illness. But some doctors see
suicide as a solution to suffering and depression as rational given
patients’ circumstances. Last year only three of the 105 patients who
died under the law were referred for a psychological exam.
A 2008 study
published in the British Medical Journal examined 58 Oregonians who
sought information on assisted suicide. Of them, 26% met the criteria
for depressive disorder, and 22% for anxiety disorder. Three of the
depressed individuals received and ingested the lethal drugs, dying
within two months of being interviewed. The study’s authors concluded
that Oregon’s law “may not adequately protect all mentally ill
patients.”
Also concerning
are the regular notices I receive indicating that many important
services and drugs for my patients—even some pain medications—will not
be covered by the Oregon Health Plan, the state’s Medicaid program. Yet
physician-assisted suicide is covered by the state and our collective
tax dollars. Supporters claim physician-assisted suicide gives patients
choice, but what sort of a choice is it when life is expensive but
death is free?
A shroud of
secrecy envelops the practice of assisted suicide. Doctors engaging in
it do not accurately report the actual manner of death. Instead they
are required by state law to fabricate the death certificate, stating
that the cause is “natural” rather than suicide. In late 1997, right
before assisted suicide was about to begin, the state legislature
implemented a system of two different death certificates—one that is
public and includes no medical information and another that is kept
private by the state. As a result, no one outside of the Oregon Health
Division knows precisely how many assisted suicides have taken place,
because accurately tracking them has been made impossible.
In my practice,
more than two dozen patients have discussed assisted suicide with me.
Most did not have a terminal diagnosis. One inquiry came from a patient
with a progressive form of multiple sclerosis. He was in a wheelchair
yet lived an active life as a general contractor. I asked him how the
disease affected his life. He acknowledged that MS was a major
challenge and told me that if he got too much worse, he might want to
“just end it.”
I told him I
could understand his fear and frustration and even his belief that
assisted suicide might be a good option. I also told him that should he
become sicker or weaker, I would work to provide him the best care and
support available. No matter how debilitated he might become, his life
was, and would always be, inherently valuable. As such, I said that
would I not recommend nor would I participate in his suicide. He simply
replied: “Thank you.”
The way that
physicians respond to patients’ requests for lethal drugs has a
profound effect on their choices and their view of themselves and their
inherent worth. Such patients deserve doctors who will support them
through their illnesses, not offer them a quick exit.
One of the most
troubling notions I hear is that killing oneself with sleeping pills is
“dignified”—as if natural deaths aren’t. Last year my wife, Marlene,
died of metastatic cancer. We’d been married for 40 years. The final
five years we both knew she would inevitably die of her cancer. At one
point doctors told her that she had only three to nine months left, yet
she lived more than four times as long.
While I treasure
all of our years together, the last years of our marriage were among
the best. There was great suffering but also great joy and meaning in
the special moments we and our seven children shared together—moments
that became all the more special the closer we came to the end of her
life. I wouldn’t trade a nanosecond of those last years. She died
peacefully and naturally at home surrounded by her family and friends.
She never took an overdose, yet her death and life had great dignity.
Some two dozen
suicide bills have been introduced in legislatures around the country,
from California to Maine. These states should heed the example of
Oregon, where assisted suicide has been detrimental to patients,
degraded the quality of medical care, and compromised the integrity of
the medical profession.
There are some
encouraging signs. In 2012 an assisted-suicide referendum narrowly
failed in Massachusetts by two percentage points. The California senate
passed a suicide bill in June, but it stalled in the state assembly
after opposition to it mounted.
As a society we
should continue to reject the legalization of physician-assisted
suicide as a solution to suffering. Instead we must work to increase
access to hospice and palliative care to better support those suffering
from terminal illness. The sick and aging deserve better than Oregon’s
mistake.

REGARDING THE DEBATE BETWEEN NEW LONDON MAYOR FINIZIO AND CANDIDATE
PASSERO.
As I viewed it streaming live on the web page of The DAY, moderator of
the debate, I thought of two literary classics: "ALICE IN WONDERLAND"
and " A TALE OF TWO CITIES". Although standing just a few feet
apart, these two worthy adversaries could not have been more far apart,
despite both being Democrats. Meanwhile, as I believe is true in
the nation itself, the outcome of this local election and also of the
2016 national election will be based upon how sick and tired of
political "business as usual" folks are...and on how depressed and
immobilized they are.

"IF
I WERE A RICH MAN..."
I
would become a candidate for President of the United States.
I
kid you not!
I
could do no worse than we have witnessed during the last 7
years.
And
I would do at least as well as some of the Republican
candidates.
As
for Hillary Clinton, "fuggedaboudet". As for
Joe Biden...promising.
You
may not know that I was a Democrat for 26 years...until the
Democrats lost their minds...and possibly their souls.
SO:
WHAT WOULD BE MY POSITIONS?
All
you have to do is to Search them on my web site, especially
including the Rapid Response section going back to March, 2003.
But
I'll offer an incomplete, "Executive Summary".
Racial
Bias:
it's there, still, but in isolated pockets of society - except in
some loud elements of Black society, which tend to be the most
"racist".
Social
Inequality.
Of course it exists, in Capitalist societies and in Communist
societies. What to do? Study and Work. Work and
Study. And
stop whining!
The
Addiction to Sex
and the more base instincts of human nature. And maybe be
then your "Mojo" will come back...without the need for Viagra or
Cialis. And take another look at Spirituality, whatever the Religion.
Immigration.
We need immigrants. We always have. But we must have
effective control of our borders (if we want to be considered an actual
country) assure that only legal immigrants come in, provide a strict
mechanism
for illegal immigrants already here - and law-abiding - to achieve
legal status
over time, and uphold the 14th Amendment of our Federal Constitution
regarding
all persons born on U.S. soil.
Taxation.
A Flat Tax, without deductibles, for private citizens and for
corporations,
should be seriously considered.
Elections:
Limitation
on running time for elected office, total transparency
regarding political donations, and term limits for all elected
officials.
Climate
Change.
It's here. Whatever the reasons, we should not be soiling
our nest in avoidable ways, as we are obvious doing.
Crime
and Punishment.
Really, applied to all the lawless, from the pimp to the
President.
Our
"Allies". Ha! Nations do not have friends.
They only have Interests. Get it? And that goes for our dealings with
the
"United Nations".
Our
"Enemies".
No, our adversaries at a point in time. Except maybe Russia
and China.
Islam.
A worthy if confused and divided Religion. Only they can resolve
their
issues. Meanwhile, Isis, Al Qaida, the Taliban are dissembling
wolves in
religious clothing. As they are attacking us, we must destroy
them - and
now, not "30 years" from now, as even some of our confused and
self-serving military "leaders" are saying. Look at the
opportunity of the 1930's regarding Nazi Germany and Imperialist
Japan...and
what those lost opportunities produced.
Iran.
This administration is out of its mind, or
totally out of courage, to push the "agreement" now before
Congress.
Enough...for
now. "IF I WERE A RICH MAN..."

From the individual and mass beheadings, to the disruption of an entire
sub-continent with a most radical and unsupportable interpretation of

ISIS will have to be confronted and destroyed, from within the Muslim

PRECISION.
Important in Science, in Engineering, in Politics (although rarely
achieved), and also in Language.
Please read the following fascinating article in reflecting the
importance of precision in language. Whether referring to the

atomic bombs, or to the cynical statement of an evil madman (Stalin:
"One death is a tragedy; 20 million deaths is a statistic"), or to the
entire trade of Diplomacy, or to the massive number of abortions of
living human beings as "women's health", precision counts!

THE DEBATE, AKA " GOTCHA".
I watched the entire debate among the major Republican candidates. And
yet I can't recognize the reportage that it produced.
All of the candidates were adult and articulate; and they were helpful
in their proposed approaches to serious national problems that have
been either ignored or have been produced by the current administration
since 2008.
The big surprise was Megyn Kelly. She had her own agenda. Is she
a closet ultra-liberal? Or is she simply another deluded or cynical
female who thinks that being against killing babies in the womb is an
"attack on women's health"?
If you missed the debate, you missed it...and you can't catch up by
reading about it - not these days and not with this Yellow Journalism.
You'll just have to wait for the next debates, "the real deal".

FROM THE BEGINNING OF HUMAN
LIFE AT CONCEPTION TO ITS END, IS THIS THE OTHER "SILENT HOLOCAUST"?
I
just received an audit on
my tax return for 2012 back from the IRS. It puzzles me!!! They
are questioning how many dependents I claimed. I
guess it was because of my response to the question: "List all
dependents?" I
replied: 12 million illegal immigrants; 3 million crack heads; 42
million unemployed people on food stamps, 2
million people in over 243 prisons; and 535 persons in the U.S. House
and
Senate." 1
useless President. Evidently,
this was NOT an acceptable answer. I
KEEP ASKING MYSELF, WHO The Hell DID I MISS?

Please review the article in
the Huffington Post, August 3, 2015, by Eric Zuesse, entitled: "Jimmy
Carter Is Correct That The U.S. Is No Longer A Democracy".
Most
seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God
decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for
their
glasses, keys and other things thus doing more walking. And God looked
down and
saw that it was good. Then God
saw there was another need. In His wisdom He made
seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to
bend,
reach & stretch. And God
looked down and saw that it was good.
Then God
considered the function of bladders and decided
seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to
the
bathroom, thus providing more exercise. God looked down and saw that it
was
good. So if
you find as you age, you are getting up and down more,
remember it’s God’s will. It is all in your best interest even though
you
mutter under your breath.

Please see my recent offering
entitled: "The State of our System of Justice."
Now comes yet another shocking encounter between a police officer and a
member of the public...once again resulting in death. This time
it was in Cincinnati, and once again it involved a traffic stop.
However, this time we had the benefit of the officer's body cam, at
least as much as was released publicly. From what I viewed and
have heard, I can come to several opinions: 1) the officer was
tentative, even fearful, and evidently not well trained in this work,
being a college campus officer; 2) the police procedure he was
apparently following leaved much to be desired, as he seemed to wonder
whether to allow the victim allegedly to get his driver's license from
his glove compartment...vs possibly a gun; 3) the victim seemed on the
video to make a sudden move, which spooked the officer into shooting
and killing him; 4) the District Attorney grossly over-reacted in
immediately charging the officer with "Homicide". So far, it
seems like a tragedy of errors.
I believe that there is much more to see and to know here. Stay
tuned.

REGARDING THE REAL PROBLEM WITH
"SAME SEX MARRIAGES".
The report reproduced below gives me an opportunity to address the
issue of Homosexuality. First of all, for the great majority of
homosexual persons this is a biologic fact begun in utero and not a
choice. The degree of "penetrance" of the tendency varies, as does
"maleness" and "femaleness" in "straight people. How persons
express that fact should be a matter between themselves and their
Creator.
Beyond that, Society has an important role to play, in Civil Law but
certainly not in Criminal Law. A same-sex couple should be
accorded the same legal rights as "straight" couples, under the rubric
"Civil Union". But, given the foundational role of traditional
Marriage in Society for eons - especially regarding children -
that Term should be reserved for a man and a woman - in Civil Law and
certainly as a religious Sacrament. In fact, the Sacrament of
Matrimony, also a contract, is held not to have been valid without the
"consideration" of a couple's intent to bear children. The
absence of that intent is grounds for a valid Annulment in the Catholic
Church.
And here we get to the crux of the distinction between "Civil Union"
and "Marriage". The central purpose of the latter is to procreate
and raise healthy children. That is not the case with same-sex
relationships. And the results for the children are important to
both the children and to the Society which they will join as
adults. PLEASE SEE THE FOLLOWING REPORT ON THIS SUBJECT,
REPRODUCED BELOW.
Thus, the entire matter of Homosexuality and homosexual relationships
would be better approached, and with less "sturm und drang", by
reference to the above facts. Of course, cessation of the radical
diatribes engaged in by the Far Right and by the "flaming" far Left
would be of great help.
