RAPID RESPONSE (Archives)...Daily Commentary on News of the Day
This is a new section.  It will offer fresh, quick reactions by myself to news and events of the day, day by day, in this rapid-fire world of ours.  Of course, as in military campaigns, a rapid response in one direction may occasionally have to be followed by a "strategic withdrawal" in another direction.  Charge that to "the fog of war", and to the necessary flexibility any mental or military campaign must maintain to be effective.  But the mission will always be the same: common sense, based upon facts and "real politick", supported by a visceral sense of Justice and a commitment to be pro-active.  That's all I promise.

Please see my recent offering entitled: "The State of our System of Justice."
Now comes yet another shocking encounter between a police officer and a member of the public...once again resulting in death.  This time it was in Cincinnati, and once again it involved a traffic stop.
However, this time we had the benefit of the officer's body cam, at least as much as was released publicly.  From what I viewed and have heard, I can come to several opinions: 1) the officer was tentative, even fearful, and evidently not well trained in this work, being a college campus officer; 2) the police procedure he was apparently following leaved much to be desired, as he seemed to wonder whether to allow the victim allegedly to get his driver's license from his glove compartment...vs possibly a gun; 3) the victim seemed on the video to make a sudden move, which spooked the officer into shooting and killing him; 4) the District Attorney grossly over-reacted in immediately charging the officer with "Homicide".  So far, it seems like a tragedy of errors.
I believe that there is much more to see and to know here.  Stay tuned.

REGARDING THE REAL PROBLEM WITH "SAME SEX MARRIAGES".
The report reproduced below gives me an opportunity to address the issue of Homosexuality.  First of all, for the great majority of homosexual persons this is a biologic fact begun in utero and not a choice. The degree of "penetrance" of the tendency varies, as does "maleness" and "femaleness" in "straight people.  How persons express that fact should be a matter between themselves and their Creator.

Beyond that, Society has an important role to play, in Civil Law but certainly not in Criminal Law.  A same-sex couple should be accorded the same legal rights as "straight" couples, under the rubric "Civil Union".  But, given the foundational role of traditional Marriage in Society for eons - especially regarding children -  that Term should be reserved for a man and a woman - in Civil Law and certainly as a religious Sacrament.  In fact, the Sacrament of Matrimony, also a contract, is held not to have been valid without the "consideration" of a couple's intent to bear children.  The absence of that intent is grounds for a valid Annulment in the Catholic Church.

And here we get to the crux of the distinction between "Civil Union" and "Marriage".  The central purpose of the latter is to procreate and raise healthy children.  That is not the case with same-sex relationships.  And the results for the children are important to both the children and to the Society which they will join as adults.  PLEASE SEE THE FOLLOWING REPORT ON THIS SUBJECT, REPRODUCED BELOW.
Thus, the entire matter of Homosexuality and homosexual relationships would be better approached, and with less "sturm und drang", by reference to the above facts.  Of course, cessation of the radical diatribes engaged in by the Far Right and by the "flaming" far Left would be of great help.

Re. The State of our System of Justice:
On the evening of July 25, John Stossel presented a program highly critical of (should I say damning?) our Criminal Justice System.  If the Health Care Professions operated in that fashion, we would all be in jail.  Of course, our patients come seeking our help and are generally compliant. Not so in criminal justice work, beginning with the first encounter with an arresting Officer - with increasing frequency reflecting defiance rather than due respect and often  resulting in serious physical confrontation. And it evidently gets worse from there.  The worst part is not the interminable delays or the conditions upon incarceration (even before a charge is filed).  The worst part is prosecutorial  abuse of discretion and / or abuse of process.  The result in too many cases is Justice delayed, Justice denied and Justice defiled.  Here the lack until relatively recently of the powerful tool of DNA is only a small part of what can only be called criminality on the part of some investigative police and some prosecutors.
My solution for that: upon determining what happened, if intentional, the involved police and / prosecutors should be made to serve the same time that the victims of the abuse of process served.

And we won't deal here with the flagrant "Justice Delayed, Justice Denied" that has become the hallmark of the Civil Justice System.
So, I ask you: WHAT WORKS IN OUR CURRENT SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT?"

Brilliance in Three (3) parts = Another Simple Solution to a Complex Problem ……….

Part I:

A.  Back off and let those men who want to marry men, marry men.

B. Allow those women who want to marry women, marry women.

C. Allow those folks who want to abort their babies, abort their babies.

D. In three generations, there will be no Democrats.

I love it when a plan comes together!

Part II:

What do the top ten cities (over 250,000) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Detroit, MI   - (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican  mayor since 1961

Buffalo, NY - (2nd) hasn't elected one since 1954

Cincinnati, OH - (3rd) not since 1984

Cleveland, OH - (4th) not since 1989

Miami, FL - (5th) has never had a Republican mayor

St. Louis, MO - (6th) not since 1949

El Paso, TX - (7th) has never had a Republican mayor

Milwaukee, WI - (8th) not since 1908

Philadelphia, PA - (9th) not since 1952

Newark, NJ - (10th) not since 1907

10 Poorest Cities in America (How did it happen?)

City, State, % of People Below the Poverty Level

1. Detroit , MI 32.5%

2. Buffalo , NY 29.9%

3. Cincinnati , OH 27.8%

4. Cleveland , OH 27.0%

5. Miami , FL 26.9%

5. St. Louis , MO 26.8%

7. El Paso , TX 26.4%

8. Milwaukee , WI 26.2%

9. Philadelphia , PA 25.1%

10. Newark , NJ 24.2%

Einstein once said, 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and

expecting different results.'

It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats....... yet they are still POOR.

Part III:

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."

As a brief reminder for those who forgot or for many that didn't know.

Here is what happened, quietly, on January 1, 2015:

Medicare tax went from 1.45% to 2.35%

Top Income tax bracket went from 35% to 39.6%
PUNISH THE WORKERS....TO REWARD THE NON WORKERS

Top Income payroll tax went from 37.4% to 52.2%
MORE PUNISHMENT FOR WORKING HARD!

Capital Gains tax went from 15% to 28%
MORE TAX UPON INCOME THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN TAXED!

Dividend tax went from 15% to 39.6%
MORE PUNISHMENT FOR INVESTING WISELY AND MAKING GOOD DECISIONS!

Estate tax went from 0% to 55% PUNISHMENT FOR SAVING FOR THE NEXT GENERATION! ONLY TO HAVE IT GO TO THE GOVERNMENT!
A 3.5% Real Estate transaction tax was added. MORE PUNISHMENT FOR INVESTING IN A HOME OR RENTAL PROPERTY!
Remember this fact: These taxes were all passed solely with Democrat votes, Not a single Republican voted for these new taxes.

These taxes were all passed in the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare.

GS

How every single Marine feels right now:
Congratulations, ISIS.
You wanted attention, and yesterday, you got it. Only, you chose the wrong people to seek that attention from.
...
You did not get the attention of our weak President. He tweeted his support for your medieval holiday following your cowardly attack. You did not get the attention of our useless and corrupt Congress. They were too busy lining their pockets.
When you attacked those four Marines, you got the attention of every one of our 186,800 active duty Marines, along with every Marine who ever served.
You just stirred up hate, discontent, and malice within a group of people who relish the idea of engaging the enemy.
There is something you obviously don't yet know about Marines...
The brotherhood we share is stronger than the challenges we face, the weapons we master, or the enemies we destroy.
You will learn that soon though.
You attacked a group of men who bond over the smell of gunpowder and misery—and enjoy it. You didn't attack America's leaders, you attacked America's Marines, and that is a battle you are not prepared for.
You see, we won't play by the rules you're accustomed to seeing. When you play in our backyard, we don't have to answer to any chain of command. We will not follow ridiculous ROEs crafted by a spineless bureaucrat to appease some goat herding tribal leader. And we won't be wearing uniforms so that you can easily ambush us.
Nope. None of that shit.
When you think you're walking into a target-rich environment, you're really walking into an ambush.
That pudgy, middle-aged guy wearing khakis in the mall, who unbeknownst to you, is a former 0311 and armed, will dump your sorry ass before you have a chance to scream "allah snackbar." And that soccer mom pushing a stroller, she's got a Glock and will happily leave you gasping in a pool of your own blood before she lets you hurt her children.
We are here and we still have the training and experience to wage war, whether here or abroad. And wage war we will. Every one of us are willing to fight and die to protect our Marine Corps brothers and sisters, our families and friends, and our way of life.
And we will win, because while you fight to destroy what you hate, we fight to protect what we love.

HERE I PARAPHRASE:

"DEMOCRACY IS THE WORST FORM OF GOVERNMENT...EXCEPT FOR ALL THE REST"

This sentiment, expressed by Winston Churchill in the House of Commons in 1947, has been true ever since man put down his club and took to the podium.  I have to remember this every time I think: "Nothing Works".  I also have to remember the origin of the word "politics": from the Greek "politos", meaning "people".  And people have never changed, and probably never will.  Man evolved just too rapidly for the cerebral cortex to take adequate control over the hindbrain.
Nevertheless, we the people just have to stay informed and to participate if democracy is to have any chance to suppress our more base instinct to take up the club again.

The most current issue is President Obama's deal with Iran.  It will take five to ten years to understand the wisdom or folly of that exercise.  But meanwhile we do have some guidance. Here I offer two published articles.  The first deals with a very likely outcome. The second is directed toward President Obama's motivation.  Or, to pose the question in more traditional terms: "What Was He Thinking...?"

The typical U.S.  household headed by a person age 65 or older has a net worth 47 times greater than a household headed by someone under 35, according to an analysis of census data released Monday.

They like to refer to us as senior citizens, old fogies, geezers, and in some cases dinosaurs.  Some of us are "Baby Boomers" getting ready to retire.  Others have been retired for some time.  We walk a little slower these days and our eyes and hearing are not what they once were.  We worked hard, raised our children, worshiped our God and grown old together.

Yes, we are the ones some refer to as being over the hill, and that is probably true.  But before writing us off completely, there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration.

In school we studied English, history, math, and science which enabled us to lead America into the technological age.  Most of us remember what outhouses were, many of us with firsthand experience.  We remember the days of telephone party-lines, 25 cent gasoline, and milk and ice being delivered to our homes.  For those of you who don't know what an icebox is, today they are electric and referred to as refrigerators.  A few even remember when cars were started with a crank.  Yes, we lived those days.

We are probably considered old fashioned and out-dated by many.  But there are a few things you need to remember before completely writing us off.  We won World War II, fought in Korea and Viet Nam.  We can quote The Pledge of Allegiance, and know where to place our hand while doing so.  We wore the uniform of our country with pride and lost many friends on the battlefield.  We didn't fight for the Socialist States of America ; we fought for the "Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave." We wore different uniforms but carried the same flag.  We know the words to the Star Spangled Banner, America, and America the Beautiful by heart, and you may even see some tears running down our cheeks as we sing.  We have lived what many of you have only read in history books and we feel no obligation to apologize to anyone for America.

Yes, we are old and slow these days but rest assured, we have at least one good fight left in us.  We have loved this country, fought for it, and died for it, and now we are going to save it.  It is our country and nobody is going to take it away from us.  We took oaths to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that is an oath we plan to keep.  There are those who want to destroy this land we love but, like our founders, there is no way we are going to remain silent.

It was mostly the young people of this nation who elected Obama and the Democrat Congress.  You fell for the "Hope and Change" which in reality was nothing but "Hype and Lies."

You youngsters have tasted socialism and seen evil face to face, and have found you don't like it after all.  You make a lot of noise, but most are all too interested in their careers or "Climbing the Social Ladder" to be involved in such mundane things as patriotism and voting.  Many of those who fell for the "Great Lie" in 2008 are now having buyer's remorse.  With all the education we gave you, you didn't have sense enough to see through the lies and instead drank the 'Kool-Aid.' Now you're paying the price and complaining about it.  No jobs, lost mortgages, higher taxes, and less freedom.  This is what you voted for and this is what you got.  We entrusted you with the Torch of Liberty and you traded it for a paycheck and a fancy house.

Well, don't worry youngsters, the Grey-Haired Brigade is here, and in 2016 we are going to take back our nation.  We may drive a little slower than you would like but we get where we're going, and in 2016 we're going to the polls by the millions.

This land does not belong to the man in the White House nor to the likes of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Eric Holder.  It belongs to "We the People" and "We the People" plan to reclaim our land and our freedom.

We hope this time you will do a better job of preserving it and passing it along to our grandchildren.  So the next time you have the chance to say the Pledge of Allegiance, Stand up, put your hand over your heart, honor our country, and thank God for the old geezers of the "Gray-Haired Brigade."

Footnote: This is spot on.  I am another Gray-Haired Geezer signing on.  I will circulate this to other Gray-Haired Geezers all over this once great county.  Can you feel the ground shaking???  It's not an earthquake, it is a STAMPEDE.

My peers and I are Members.

"Well, ya see, Norm, it's like this...  A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members! In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."
