RAPID RESPONSE (Archives)...Daily Commentary on News of the Day
This is a new section.  It will offer fresh, quick reactions by myself to news and events of the day, day by day, in this rapid-fire world of ours.  Of course, as in military campaigns, a rapid response in one direction may occasionally have to be followed by a "strategic withdrawal" in another direction.  Charge that to "the fog of war", and to the necessary flexibility any mental or military campaign must maintain to be effective.  But the mission will always be the same: common sense, based upon facts and "real politick", supported by a visceral sense of Justice and a commitment to be pro-active.  That's all I promise.

ALL "TRUE, TRUE AND RELATED".
This situation is a massive stain on American Society.
RESTORE THE DRAFT for every able-bodied citizen: two years of active duty, with an extra initial year of remediation for those millions who got nothing out of our execrable public education system.  This would also serve the needs for those who want to "march".
PS:  I served two years in the US Army Medical Corps, 1960-62, with another 6 years of reserves, as part of the Berry Plan.  I consider that time as one of my most valuable experiences.

Subject: General Patraeus on the Military today

I remember  the day I found out I got into West Point.  My Mom actually showed up in  the hallway of my high school and waited for me to get out of class.

She was  bawling her eyes out and apologizing that she had opened up my admission  letter.  She wasn't crying because it had been her dream for me to go  there.  She was crying because she knew how hard I'd worked to get in, how  much I wanted to attend, and how much I wanted to be an infantry officer.

I was going  to get that opportunity.  That same day two of my teachers took me aside  and essentially told me the following:

"David,  you're a smart guy.  You don't have to join the military.  You should  go to college, instead."

I could  easily write a theme defending West Point and the military as I did that day,  explaining that United States Military Academy is an elite institution, that  separate from that, it is actually statistically much harder to enlist in the  military than it is to get admitted to college, that serving the nation is a  challenge that all able-bodied men should at least consider for a host of  reasons, but I won't.

What I will  say is that when a 16 year-old kid is being told that attending West Point is  going to be bad for his future then there is a dangerous disconnect in America,  and entirely too many Americans have no idea what kind of burdens our military  is bearing.

In World War  II, 11.2% of the nation's population served for four (4) years.

During the  Vietnam era, 4.3% of the nation's population served in twelve (12) years.

Since 2001,  only 0.45% of our population has served in the Global War on Terror.

These are  unbelievable statistics.  Over time, fewer and fewer people have shouldered  more and more of the burden and it is only getting worse.

Our troops  were sent to war in Iraq by a Congress consisting of 10% veterans with only one  person having a child in the military.  Taxes did not increase to pay for  the war.  War bonds were not sold.  Gas was not regulated.  In  fact, the average citizen was asked to sacrifice nothing, and has sacrificed  nothing unless they have chosen to out of the goodness of their hearts.

The only  people who have sacrificed are the veterans and their families.  The volunteers.  The people who swore an oath to defend this nation.  You  stand there, deployment after deployment and fight on.  You've lost  relationships, spent years of your lives in extreme conditions, years apart from  kids you'll never get back, and beaten your body in a way that even professional  athletes don't understand.

Then you  come home to a nation that doesn't understand.  They don't understand  suffering.  They don't understand sacrifice.  They don't understand  why we fight for them.  They don't understand that bad people exist.   They look at you like you're a machine - like something is wrong with  you.  You are the misguided one - not them.

When you get out, you sit in the college classrooms with political science teachers that discount your opinions on Iraq and Afghanistan because YOU WERE THERE and can’t understand the macro issues they gathered from books, because of your bias.

You watch TV  shows where every vet has PTSD and the violent strain at that.  Your  Congress is debating your benefits, your retirement, and your pay, while they  ask you to do more.  But, the amazing thing about you is that you all know  this.  You know your country will never pay back what you've given  up.  You know that the populace at large will never truly understand or  appreciate what you have done for them.

Hell, you know that in some circles, you will be thought as less than normal for having worn the uniform.  But you do it anyway.

You do what  the greatest men and women of this country have done since 1775.

YOU  SERVED.  Just that decision alone makes you part of an elite group.

"Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few."  -Winston Churchill- Thank you to the 11.2% and 4.3% who have served and thanks  to the 0.45% who continue to serve our Nation.

Crabby Old Woman

When an old woman died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in
Moosomin, Saskatchewan, it was believed that she had nothing left
of any value. Later, when the nurses were going through her
meager possessions, they found this poem.

Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were
made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital. One nurse
took her copy to Alberta.

The old woman's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the
Christmas edition of the News Magazine of the St. Louis Association
for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based
on his simple, but eloquent, poem.

And this little old woman, with nothing left to give to the world, is now
the author of this 'anonymous' poem winging across the Internet.

Crabby Old Lady

What do you see nurses? .. .. .. What do you see?
What are you thinking .. .. .. when you're looking at me?
A crabby old lady .. .. .. not very wise,
Uncertain of habit .. .. .. with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles her food .. .. .. and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice .. .. .. 'I do wish you'd try!'
Who seems not to notice .. .. .. the things that you do.
And forever is losing .. .. .. A sock or shoe?

Who, resisting or not .. .. .. lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding .. .. .. a long day to fill?
Is that what you're thinking? .. .. .. Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse .. .. .. you're not looking at me.

I'll tell you who I am .. .. .. As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, .. .. .. as I eat at your will.
I'm a small girl of Ten .. .. .. with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters .. .. .. who love one another.

A young girl of Sixteen .. .. .. with wings on her feet.
Dreaming that soon now .. .. .. a lover she'll meet.
A bride soon at Twenty .. .. .. my heart gives a leap.
Remembering, the vows .. .. .. that I promised to keep.

At Twenty-Five, now .. .. .. I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide .. .. .. a secure happy home.
A woman of Thirty .. .. .. My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other .. .. .. With ties that should last.

At Forty, my young sons .. .. .. have grown and are gone,
But my man is beside me .. .. .. to see I don't mourn.
At Fifty, once more, .. .. .. babies play 'round my knee,
Again, we know children .. .. .. My loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me .. .. .. my husband's now dead.
I look at the future .. .. .. and shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing .. .. .. young of their own.
And I think of the years .. .. .. and the love that I've known.

I'm now an old woman .. .. .. and nature is cruel.
'Tis jest to make old age .. .. .. look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles .. .. .. grace and vigor depart.
There is now a stone .. .. .. where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass .. .. .. a young girl still dwells,
And now and again .. .. .. my battered heart swells.
I remember the joys .. .. .. I remember the pain.
And I'm loving and living .. .. .. life over again.

I think of the years, all too few .. .. .. gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact .. .. .. that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people .. .. .. open and see.
Not a crabby old woman .. .. .. look closer .. .. .. see ME!!

Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who
you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within.

We will all, one day, be there, too!

The new face of the GOP
Yahoo! News
By Gabriel Noble

Thanks to a bloodbath in the midterm elections, Republicans now control both the House and Senate, and they are setting their sights on the White House for 2016. They are undoubtedly energized by young and diverse representatives such as Mia Love, the first African American Republican woman in the House, and Elise Stefanik, the youngest woman to be elected to Congress.

In West Virginia, Saira Blair won a seat in House of Delegates, becoming the nation’s youngest elected state legislator.

Blair and her father, state Sen. Craig Blair, sat down with Yahoo Global News anchor Katie Couric to discuss her inspiration to run, her historic win, and hope for her generation in the political process. “My generation is going to have $17 trillion of debt on our hands. And we deserve at least one vote in the House of Delegates. Because we shouldn't have to wait until we're 30, 40, 50 or 60 to understand the importance of conservative principles,” Blair said.

Raffi Williams, deputy director of the Republican National Committee, is tasked with spreading the Republican message to the younger generation. Borrowing the strategy of President Barack Obama’s groundbreaking Internet campaign, he says, “We have a new digital and data program that is … using social media and leveraging it to target voters in new ways.”

And then there are online news sites, such as the Independent Journal Review with over 24 million views monthly, that reach millennials and bring them up to speed in politics and culture on an entertaining way.

But despite the strides the GOP is making toward a more diverse leadership, the age gap in voting preferences that emerged in 2004 has remained evident in the past four election cycles. Voters who are 18 to 29 vote Democrat, and those older than 65 lean Republican.

According to the Pew Research Center, “Millennials stand out for voting heavily Democratic and for liberal views on many political and social issues, ranging from a belief in an activist government to support for same-sex marriage and marijuana legalization.”

So millennial Republicans like Blair have a lot of work to do before the Grand Old Party begins to look young.

REGARDING "TORTURE", AND THE TORTURED LOGIC SURROUNDING IT"

When this subject came up initially in the mid-2000's, I expressed my opinions in the then-"Rapid Response" offerings, searchable if one is interested.
In the days since publication of the one-sided report on "torture" by Senator Dianne Finestein's committee, nearly everyone has expressed an opinion.  I have reviewed most of those offerings.  I suggest two for general perusal: a) "A Flawed Report's Important Lesson", by Peggy Noonan, WSJ Dec. 13-14, 2014, Opinion, pA13; and b) "A travesty Of A Report Seeks History Rewrite", by Charles Krauthammer, in The Day Dec. 12, 2014, Opinion, pA6.
Where we must really begin and end is with the abuse of the word "torture" in this context.  Encyclopedia Britannica defines it as "a general term for methods of intense pain...." Webster's Dictionary describes "the infliction of intense pain...." Article l of the U.N. Convention Against Torture is also informative, although including the caveat "if not lawful" (?).
In my opinion, the term "torture" would require the outcome of physical injury and not only pain, fear, etc. It is my understanding that substantial efforts were made to avoid injury from the practices in question, including medical monitoring. In my opinion, such methods should only be used when an existential threat exists to a people - as was and is the case vis a vis the terrorists around us in the last two decades. And with that justification and with the proviso regarding avoidance of physical injury, the practices in question were not torture, were ethically assisted by medical personnel, and were justified...all the unending conclusory statements to the contrary notwithstanding.  Now: will anyone actually use that reasoning to justify the practices in question, instead of capitulating to the incorrect, political and cynical misuse of the word "torture"?

When I was a kid, I couldn't understand why Eisenhower was so popular.  Maybe this will explain why.

General Eisenhower Warned Us

It is a matter of history  that when the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.

He did this because he said in words to this effect:

'Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses -because somewhere down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened'

This week, the  UK  debated whether to remove The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offends' the Muslim population which claims it never occurred. It is not removed as yet.. However, this is a
frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it.

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in  Europe  ended. This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the,6 million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians, and 1,900 Catholic priests Who were 'murdered, raped, burned, starved, beaten, experimented on and humiliated' while the German people looked the other way!

Now, more than ever, with  Iran , among others, claiming the Holocaust to be
a myth,' it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.

This e-mail is intended to reach 400 million people! Be a link in the memorial chain and help distribute this around the world.

How many years will it be before the attack on the  World   Trade   Center

'NEVER HAPPENED'

DELICIOUS.

GS

The Manitoba Herald:

The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration.  The Republicans winning the Senate is prompting an exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be required to hunt, pray, and live according to the Constitution.

Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, global warming activists, and "green" energy proponents crossing their fields at night.

"I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn," said Southern Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota .  “The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry.  He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn't have any, he left before I even got a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?"

In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them.  He then installed loudspeakers that blared Rush Limbaugh across the fields, but they just keep coming.

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into electric cars  and drive them across the border where they are simply left to fend for themselves after the battery dies.

"A lot of these people are not prepared for our rugged conditions," an Ontario border patrolman said.  "I found one carload without a single bottle of Perrier drinking water.  They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though, and some kale chips."

When liberals are caught, they're sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives.  Rumors have been circulating about plans being made to build re-education camps where liberals will be forced to drink domestic beer and study the Constitution.

In recent days, liberals have turned to ingenious ways of crossing the border.  Some have been disguised as senior citizens taking a bus trip to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs.  After catching a half- dozen young vegans in blue-hair wig disguises, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior citizens about Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney to prove that they were alive in the '50s. "If they can't identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we become very suspicious about their age," an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage, buying up all the Barbara Streisand c.d.'s, and renting all the Michael Moore movies.  "I really feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can't support them," an Ottawa resident said.  "How many art-history majors does one country need?"

Trying to reassure his liberal base and get them to return to the U.S., President Obama reiterated what he said in his press conference following the beating the democrats took in the last election: "I heard from the 1/3 of the electorate that voted, but I also heard from the 2/3 that did not vote."  Who knew the president was clairvoyant?

He also said the reason the democrats got their asses whipped wasn't because of HIS policies, but rather because the Dems did not get his message out to the people.  Ya gotta love a guy that takes responsibility when something goes wrong.
