1. As reported in Fox News, ObamaCare adds 150 new boards and agencies to govern (read "interfere with") that care.
2. As reported in the NYTimes (Tuesday, Nov. 18, pA1), "Health Care Law Recasts Insurers As Obama Allies".  Doesn't that make you feel warm and fuzzy?
3. "Effect of Hospital Pay for Performance on Mortality in England (NEJM, Nov. 6, 2014, p1843). The author notes that "pay for  performance" results in health care delivery were inconsistent and small...and that a similar approach outside of health care for cognitively based tasks leads to worse performance.
4. And here, the most serious effect of such mechanisms as "Accountable Care", is the unethical placement of a physician's self-interest against that of his patient (also discussed previously in this section).  See "How Medical Care Is Being Corrupted", by Hartzband and Groopman, NYTimes Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, pA23.

3. Joan Rivers and the Practice of Medicine. It's systematic routine and discipline...not genius.  Here, celebrity got in the way.
4. End of Life Care.  Here, physicians should return to  their origins as priests, easing our transition from life  to after-life.  See the book "Medicine And What Matters In The End", by Atul Gawande, M.D., as reviewed recently in NYTimes Book Review by Sheri Fink.
5. Anti-Abortion: The ONE NON-NEGOTIABLE. Evidently, gnawing pangs of conscience are reaching into the voting booth.  In 26 national races where anti-abortion and pro-abortion candidates were pitted against each other, 19 anti-abortion candidates won.
6. Nowhere to hide.  See "AMERICA, WORLD COP", by Bret Stephens (WSJ Review, Nov. 15, 16, 2014, pC1). "No great power can safely ignore chaos and disorder in key regions of the world.  It is time for the U.S. to take a new approach - enforcing rules and standards but not trying to re-make failed societies".  Write On!
7. Is the term "Catholic College" becoming an oxymoron? See the recent Newsletter from Christendom College on the subject (www.christendom.edu). 
8. he dumbing-down of Black Democratic America. I have amply addressed this sad phenomenon in this section.  Now see: "Black Citizens Foolish Backing The Democrats", by Cal Thomas (in The Day.com, Nov. 5, 2014, Opinion, pA6).
9. The sorry state of Scientific Academia today. Everywhere we see examples of the "Scientific Method" bowing to the political needs of the moment: the strident declarations about the extent of human effect on global warming; the gaming of the FDA; the initial Ebola scene; falsifying and plagiarism of scientific "results".... But then, once in a while, comes something like landing on a comet after a 10 year chase...at 40,000 miles per hour.  Atta Boys - And Girls!
10. The State of Connecticut: read it and weep: "How Did Rich Connecticut Morph Into One Of America's Worst Performing Economies?", by Jim Powell, Forbes Magazine, Aug. 1, 2013. When my family and I moved to Connecticut in`1963, it was a Republican State.  Then it became a Democratic State.  Any questions?
11. Have you noticed? He was getting old and paunchy And his hair was falling fast,

And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in and the deeds that he had done,

in his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one. 

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors his tales became a joke,

all his buddies listened quietly for they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer, for ol' Joe has passed away,

and the world's a little poorer for a Veteran died today. 

He won't be mourned by many, Just his children and his wife.

for he lived an ordinary, very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family, going quietly on his way;

and the world won't note his passing, 'tho a Veteran died today. 

When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state,

while thousands note their passing, and proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories from the time that they were young,

but the passing of a Veteran goes unnoticed, and unsung. 

Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land,

someone who breaks his promise and deceives his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow who in times of war and strife,

goes off to serve his country and offers up his life? 

The politician's stipend and the style in which he lives,

are often disproportionate, to the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Veteran, who offered up his all,

is paid off with a medal and perhaps a pension, small. 

It is not the politicians with their compromise and ploys,

who won for us the freedom that our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand,

would you really want some cop-out, with his ever-waffling stand? 

Or would you want the one who honors home, country and kin,

Just the common Veteran, who would fight until the end. 

He was just a common Veteran, and his ranks are growing thin,

But his presence should remind us we may need his likes again.

For when countries are in conflict, we find the Veteran's part,

Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start. 

If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise,

Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline in the paper that might say:

Fallen

Rest ye weary warrior

No more fear to wrought,

Rest ye weary warrior

In the peace for which you fought.

Sleep our fallen hero

In the earth you died to save,

Sleep our fallen hero

In the freedom you selflessly gave.

Your youth is gone but not your age

Your breath is still but not your voice,

Your honor lives and so your pride

Your risks for peace your willing choice

Rest with your brothers and sisters

Who passed your way before,

Be it with those who lie at home

A country mourns and weeps

Listen to the young people, F-this, F-that, and nary anyone will step up and correct them- even with wife and kids in tow!

FINALLY - - Someone in the teaching profession had the courage to set the standards so badly needed NOW.

We watched high school principal Dennis Prager of Colorado , along with Sara Palin and Tom Brokaw on TV a couple of weeks ago....what a dynamic, down to earth speaker. Even though Palin and Brokaw were also guest speakers they did little but nod and agree with him. This is the guy that should be running for President in 2016
 

A Speech Every American High School Principal Should Give.

To the students and faculty of our high school: 
  

I am your new principal, and honored to be so. 
There is no greater calling than to teach young people. 
  

I would like to apprise you of some important changes coming to our school. I am making these changes because I am convinced that most of the ideas that have dominated public education in America have worked against you, against your teachers and against our country. 
  

First ,
this school will no longer honor race or ethnicity. I could not care less if your racial makeup is black, brown, red, yellow or white. I could not care less if your origins are African, Latin American, Asian or European, or if your ancestors arrived here on the Mayflower or on slave ships. The only identity I care about, the only one this school will recognize, is your individual identity -- your character, your scholarship, your humanity. And the only national identity this school will care about is American. 
  

This is an American public school, and American public schools were created to make better Americans. If you wish to affirm an ethnic, racial or religious identity through school, you will have to go elsewhere. We will end all ethnicity, race and non-American nationality-based celebrations. They undermine the motto of America , one of its three central values -- E pluribus Unum, "from many, one." And this school will be guided by America 's values. This includes all after-school clubs. I will not authorize clubs that divide students based on any identities. This includes race, language, religion, sexual orientation or whatever else may become in vogue in a society divided by political correctness. 
  

Your clubs will be based on interests and passions, not blood, ethnic, racial or other physically defined ties. Those clubs just cultivate narcissism -- an unhealthy preoccupation with the self -- while the purpose of education is to get you to think beyond yourself. So we will have clubs that transport you to the wonders and glories of art, music, astronomy, languages you do not already speak, carpentry and more. If the only extracurricular activities you can imagine being interested in are those based on ethnic, racial or sexual identity, that means that little outside of yourself really interests you. 
  

Second , I am uninterested in whether English is your native language. My only interest in terms of language is that you leave this school speaking and writing English as fluently as possible. The English language has united America 's citizens for over 200 years, and it will unite us at this school. It is one of the indispensable reasons this country of immigrants has always come to be one country. And if you leave this school without excellent English language skills, I would be remiss in my duty to ensure that you will be prepared to successfully compete in the American job market. We will learn other languages here -- it is deplorable that most Americans only speak English -- but if you want classes taught in your native language rather than in English, this is not your school. 
  

Third , because I regard learning as a sacred endeavor , everything in this school will reflect learning's elevated status. This means, among other things, that you and your teachers will dress accordingly. Many people in our society dress more formally for Hollywood events than for church or school. These people have their priorities backward. Therefore, there will be a formal dress code at this school. 
  

Fourth , no obscene language will be tolerated anywhere on this school's property -- whether in class, in the hallways or at athletic events. If you can't speak without using the f -word, you can't speak. By obscene language I mean the words banned by the Federal Communications Commission, plus epithets such as "Nigger," even when used by one black student to address another black, or "bitch," even when addressed by a girl to a girlfriend. It is my intent that by the time you leave this school, you will be among the few your age to instinctively distinguish between the elevated and the degraded, the holy and the obscene. 
  

Fifth , we will end all self-esteem programs. In this school, self-esteem will be attained in only one way -- the way people attained it until decided otherwise a generation ago -- by earning it. One immediate consequence is that there will be one valedictorian, not eight. 
  

Sixth , and last, I am reorienting the school toward academics and away from politics and propaganda. No more time will be devoted to scaring you about smoking and caffeine, or terrifying you about sexual harassment or global warming. No more semesters will be devoted to condom wearing and teaching you to regard sexual relations as only or primarily a health issue... There will be no more attempts to convince you that you are a victim because you are not white, or not male, or not heterosexual or not Christian. We will have failed if any one of you graduates this school and does not consider him or herself inordinately fortunate -- to be alive and to be an American.
