Point and Counterpoint: Abortion and Alternatives
- Article 17, for Sunday, August 27, 2006
THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY
The Good:
-
A lawsuit is headed to the U.S. Supreme Court challenging
a key abortion decision relating to the “health” of the mother…meaning
anything, even economic or social “health”. This is the kind
of tripe that has been imbedded in our body of laws for decades, since
Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton.
-
According to a recent Pew poll, 66% of Americans
favor broad and increased restrictions on abortion.
-
The issue of “partial birth abortion” is also
going before the USSC this Fall. Besides the abomination of it all,
medical research finds that giving birth is safer than this procedure for
the mother.
-
Recent medical research finds that increasing the oxygen
delivery to a comatose person can avoid the development of “persistent
vegetative state”.
-
In this, our American Republic, individual States
are going in various and separate ways with regard to the abortion issue.
A national Constitutional amendment guaranteeing the rights of human life
from the moment of conception is needed to replace Roe v Wade, a law based
neither on jurisprudence nor on morality nor on science. But if we
cannot adopt a national Constitutional amendment, this State by State approach
is to be preferred over Roe v Wade.
-
Italy recently joined many other nations in prohibiting suits
regarding “wrongful birth”. At least it got that right.
-
A recent study shows that education in abstinence
for high school students delays the age of first sexual encounter, and
reduces the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. WOW.
What a concept!
The Bad:
-
A California labor group wants the AFL-CIO
to endorse abortions.
-
The Boston Globe recently opined that abortion
of unwanted children is better than birth. Here’s a choice: is this
idiocy or depravity?
-
The National Academy of Sciences finds that prior abortion
is linked to premature birth problems and to problems of infertility.
-
A new “Human Rights Treaty” sponsored
by the U.N. may include the rights to abortion and euthanasia. This
effort must be aborted.
-
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops reports that the
“Plan
B” pills may work either by preventing fertilization or by interfering
with implantation of the already fertilized ovum – an abortifacient.
It is also reported that such use promotes ectopic pregnancies and sexually
transmitted diseases (STD).
The Ugly:
-
Some clinics are using tissue from babies killed in abortions
for cosmetic surgery. This should be a Scarlet Letter, visible to
all.
-
A Florida abortion business was closed recently when the
police found that a baby born alive had been killed.
Good people, there is a lot of work to be done, especially
in this political season. Remember: “In a democracy,
the people always get what they deserve”.
